What you need to know:
1. The Master is writer/director P. T. Anderson’s first film since
There Will Be Blood (2007).
2. P.T.A’s earlier masterworks include Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999) and
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
3. The Master marks Joaquin Phoenix’s return to acting duties proper after his wilderness period.
4. Anderson insists that the film is NOT inspired by L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology, possibly in a doomed attempt to (a) circumvent controversy and (b) avoid pissing off Tom Cruise.
5. The film was shot in 70MM. We’re talking old-school wide screen splendour.
6. Three words: Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Two more: great ‘tache.
