Up-close footage of lava flowing into the sea from the volcanic coastline of Hawaii early last year.
Last month, fellow explorers and filmmakers George Kourounis and Sam Cossman descended 400m into the Marum crater – an active volcano on the Vanuatu archipelago in the South Pacific.
It was a dry heat.
Extreme sports photographer Alexandre Socci pro-kayaker Pedro Oliva and his team take to the turbulent, lava-heated waters around Kilauea – an active volcano on the southeast slope of Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
Socci sez:
“As a water photographer myself I was trying to get into the water but it was impossible, the water was about 90 degrees Celsius and there were lots of lava particles floating that could burn anything in seconds… even the kayaks came out of the water with some ‘scars’ from the floating lava!!!”

Youtuber komodoyago (whose colleagues performed this experiment) sez:
The test was performed with a box of camp waste (largely food rests) in a bin bag. Estimated weight 30kg, Size 60x60x60cm. Fall height, about 80m. The lake reacts with violent lava fountaining activity, presumably in part due to steam produced from the organic matter.
Fingal County Council wishes it had one of these.
