YONEN – Dublin math-rockers go full-on jazz in new animated video

What you may need to know…

01. Last time we checked in on Yonen, we looked at their singles to date before a run of gigs around the country.

02. Business has picked up appreciably for the Dublin-based four-piece, most recently the release of new single Tokyo, via the band’s Bandcamp.

03. Streaming above is the frankly ridiculous promo video for the single. Produced by animator Ross Ryder and Algorithm Studios, it follows protagonist Podraig’s journey into the titular city over its six or seven minutes. The vid premiered on Nialler9 on Monday.

04. The band are presently on the tour in the UK with one-man band Steve Strong, having had a feature on Fecking Bahamas’ excellent Irish math-rock compilation.

Thoughts: An odyssey of a track and a stunning visual accompaniment. Top quality throughout.

Yonen – Dublin instrumentalists gigging this week

What you may need to know…

01. Dublin four-piece Yonen ply an exploratory, proggy, and in places jazzy take on post-rock.

02. Formed after those involved were inspired to do so, upon seeing Japanese instrumental trailblazers Toe perform, they quickly set about releasing a performance video for debut single Nuatum.

03. Streaming above is the band’s most recent single, Sanctos, available for free/pay-what-you-want download via Bandcamp. The whole odyssey was recorded live (!) at Volt Studios and mixed by the band’s guitarists.

04. Catch them this Thursday night at the Roisín Dubh in Galway supporting Brighton’s Poly-Math, and this Saturday night at the Spirit Store in Dundalk, headlining the main stage of the venue’s Oktoberfest proceedings.

VERDICT: Taking elements of the post-rock and math-rock oeuvres and repositioning them as suits the moment, like kids with Lego, Yonen are a joyful proposition to take in.
