In 1997, George Lucas purchased a full-page ad in Variety for James Cameron when Titanic surpassed Star Wars as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Apparently, it’s a long-standing tradition in Hollywood. Lucas himself received the bottom two plaudits from Stephen Spielberg when Star Wars outdid Jaws and E.T at the box-office. Since then, of course, Avatar has taken the crown from Titanic.
So far, Cameron hasn’t sent himself a card.
