Ireland’s house prices have recently shown signs of stabilising for the first time since 2007, with prices having risen on an annual basis for four straight months, according to the Central Statistics Office. But the country may still struggle to bring an end to its household-debt crisis until it finds a way to help its weakened banks pare down the large number of mortgage loans on their books that are in arrears.
“The banks do not have the capital to take a hit and the sovereign does not want to put more money into the banks,” said Ciaran Callaghan, an analyst at Merrion Capital. “And therein lies the dilemma.”
