At the end of the games in Brazil,
There’s a big pair of boots left to fill,
We need a new bloke,
Who can say “Okey Doke”,
To the panel, just like good old Bill.

The Old Boy is available to spend his evenings doing slightly clueless to-camera presentation while failing to keep a disorderly rabble of pundits in order, for a modest fee.

You say that like the general viewing public WANT the rabble to be kept in check.
In fairness to Bill, he knows well that people love it and is more than willing to toss in a grenade now an then.

In defence of the general public……football commentry is usually the most horrifically boring crap one could concieve. The BBC and ITV models of former footballers failing miserably to produce insight, actual opinion or anything more than crappy clicé are a waste of time and energy. Sky is only marginally better because of two former players who were known for being mouthy stirrers and an occasional Troll de force by Ruud Guillit. When he is on at least.

Give me oul lads arguing, making proposterous accusations and openly falling out over meaningless attacments to specific figures any day.
You’ll miss Eamonn Dunphy when he has completely melted.

Hear, hear…. it’s not like any of the pundits on Sky, BBC, ITV or RTE were able to call the winners in a majority of games of this World Cup.
Having them argue and disagree with each other, now and again, rather than the mostly agreeable nodding of heads that you get on UK punditry is what keeps me on RTE2.

      2. The Old Boy

I was more saying that it would be a great laugh. I always enjoyed the RTE coverage over the crap on the other side.

“Rod Liddle is the guy who left his wife and ran off with a young one.”

“Ah now Eamon, you can’t be saying that.”

Everytime I watch RTE coverage, I swear ‘never again’. Giles & Dunphy’s points of reference are more and more out of date, the most modern player they compare people to these days seems to be Liam Brady..it annoys me that they don’t seem to do any research into the players they are watching, and it annoys me that in a time of minute technical details being the difference in winning & losing, that they put so much emphasis on ‘gumption’ and ‘honesy of effort’.

But then as the old saying goes ‘The ball is round. The game lasts 90 minutes. Everything else is pure theory’

And I watch them do it all again the next time. Because watching 3 oulfellas bickering over youngfellas with stupid haircuts kicking a ball is much more fun than the ‘obviously he’ll be disappointed with that, Brian’ brigade on the other channels.

    Cheers Bill!

That pretty much sums up the brilliance of RTE’s coverage over the past 25 years. Giles saying of Stan Collymore when he was with Villa – “I wouldn’t pay him in washers, Bill.”
