This is not Rio.
By any stretch, in fairness.

Over to you Bill anyone?

He was also in the studio when Aprés Match were finishing up. So perhaps he’s a time travelling teleporter? Or they only sent one or two commentary teams? I’m guessing teleporter.
He was in Ireland commentating yes, however (just to be pedantic) the end of après match was prerecorded. So he was probably still over in wherever they do the sports commentary in Montrose.
to be even more pedantic, they never actually showed his face there as far as I could tell! Could have been an auld
mpuppetSomeone needz to get out more
Yup, ‘specially since even when commentators are at a match, they will generally be commentating from the TV screen. This is true of foreign networks as much as RTE.
Himself and Stephen Alkin were the best commentary pairing in my opinion. Kerr was funny but also better than most for the young aspiring footballers to listen to. Commenting on positional and movement aspects and not just repeating what just happened along with a replay.
Kerr was very good, but I thought Alkin was poor.
A few seasons ago Kerr was commentating on a Europa League match when Fulham were in it. Fulham conceded and he referred to their defending as, “very unfulhamistical”.
Ahaha. He’s class.
They sent over George and Ray and Peter Collins and Trevor Steven. Ray went home early cos he was sick. Also ye Apres Match ripped the piss out of this on the night in question. Sending 5 commentary teams would have been pretty expensive. So no problem, although their weird attempts to pretend they were over there were pretty shameful.
Jim Begin and Stephen Alkin were the worst culprits for this in the early stages.
Stephen Alkin mentioned, in one game, that a goal was needed to ‘break the dreadlock’.
He wasn’t in Brazil. He commentated from Donnybrook. This was fairly obvious seeing as he showed up in studio at the end of the coverage (http://balls.ie/football/video-the-end-of-last-nights-apres-match-featuring-brian-kerr-and-stephen-alkin/).
Not really a story.
The part at the end of Après match was pre-recorded. They had to in order to get the ‘punch’ sound effects right and have the two commentators in the right position.
I’m sitting here wondering what kind of a moaning feckwitted fool you would be, to be complaining about RTE not being spent on sending Brian Kerr to Brazil.
It depends Colm, beside being a Moaning feckwitted fool, do you perchance have any international football playing or coaching experience?
Any commentary experience?
Do you think that being there is the only thing that qualifies someone to commentate?
As per Dunphy’s response to Souness, managing to stay alive qualifies someone enough.

It’s all about the atmosphere.
Maybe he had a little sangria and put on some shades and got into the excitement from his living room.
RTE only sent two commentators out to Brazil. Ray Houghton and George Hamilton.
The rest of the team stayed in ireland.
RTE does this all the time at Major Tournaments to save money. Also when they had rights to the Premier league all the commentary was done past-match at RTE
Peter Collins and Trever Stevens were there too.
I’m not sure Colm understands how telecommunications work.
It’s a disgrace, Joe.
Good man Sherlock, did you think you were onto something huge? It was common knowledge himself and Alkin were commentating from Montrose. Also the biggest clue was their appearance at the end of the Apres Match sketch on the same night.
I don’t care if he was in studio or Brazil, he was by far the best commentator RTE had for the World Cup. Some of his comments were hilarious, like he was in front of his TV at home chatting to his pals/family. Well done Brian.
Brian Kerr for President:-)
Yep.
Some lad was telling me that they didn’t like Kerr because be sounded “unprofessional”.
I recommended the smugfest that is BBCs football coverage.
Lawro moaning throughout….
Completely agree – though it’s damning with faint praise.
George Hamilton is good at the classical music commentating in fairness and in a harmonic counterpoint to this story, it appeared to me that he DID pre-record his weekly Saturday show on Lyric FM but IN Brazil as he referred to the history of the Brazilian cities he was in during the shows. Amazing what they can do nowadays.
i take it all back , my hand has been slapped , i apologize profusely to all the telecommunications experts, that i didn’t have that common knowledge …. does junior internationals count??
i assumed that Kerr got that his tan from lounging around on the copacabana beach while Stephen Alkin served him Caipirinhas.
Keyboard warriors out in force today….. If we learned nothing else today is the standard of the goals in the match were of the highest quailty, which was my real intention to showcase Irish football at its best :-)
#backofthenet
come back tomorrow for the next round of fixtures, same few overweight journeymen here daily – e.g. huffing and puffing midfield ‘dynamoes’ slugging it out with a few ‘left-wingers’ and ‘right’ backs, lots of cheap shots mostly off-target but one or two decent keepers
Not good enough, Colm. You’re going to have to make some sort of televised apology. Maybe take a full-page out in the papers too. We need to know you are genuinely ashamed of what you did.
Still, you might get to go on Celebrity Big Brother after all that, so every cloud, etc.
From obscure Beatles reference to “Roight Said Fred” in one half of a meaningless third place place off.
All in a nights work for the man known as ‘The Greener’.
I love Kerr, unlucky as Ireland manager.
Caught out in an away game in Israel.
I wouldn’t agree with you there Colm at this particular moment in time.
How do you do it at Arsenal Liam?
Hang on, you’re b*tching because they DIDN’T squander your TV licence money on sending Brian Kerr to Brazil?
Colm, would you ever f**k off.
The way I see it, if the commentators are in a tiny room down the corridor, the studio anchor should say “Now we hand you over to Such & Such in a tiny room down the corridor” and not “Now we hand you over to Such & Such at the Estádio Maracanã”. If they’re actually sitting in the press box at the Estádio Maracanã, that’s cool. Otherwise its just pretend.
