I spent last night looking at twitter and seeing the horrific images, the results of kids being blown apart or shot. How sick are these people to celebrate that?

I am angry and wish i could do something to help stop this Genocide. Why do we even have the UN if they won’t intervene in cases like this?

Why is Israel let away with this?

Why does everyone cower when they are called an anti-semite by an Israeli, I know I’m not an anti semite i just hate seeing a state massacre an entire nation of people, the fact that it is a jewish state makes no difference. Also i am not a believer or a fan of people who believe in any god, but fair play to Jewish communities around the world for standing up and saying not in the name of my religion should children be bombed in there beds.

Genocide: “the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group.” Eh, no.

So just out of interest, the rockets fired into Israel by Palestine are designed to make friends? The leader of Hammas declaring ALL Israeli civilians as target, Hamas not accepting the truce brokered by Egypt?

Hamas could end all this today but they wont- this all makes great PR but I truly believe there is not one nation on earth that wouldn’t do exactly what Israel are doing now.

      1. Atticus

” truly believe there is not one nation on earth that wouldn’t do exactly what Israel are doing now.”

        A land grab?

      2. Drogg

Chris don’t be so ignorant. Have you seen the images of small children blown apart by a modern military? Israel is an oppressive occupier any person in the world would fight back in the situation Palestinians are in. How many Israelis have been killed since the fighting has begun and how many Palestinian children have been killed? Innocent children murdered in their beds, in their mothers arms and while playing games in the street. Israel is a modern country with an advanced army that has an illegal blockade on Palestine and forced these people to fight back. So you go and do your job of telling people it’s alright Israel is just defending itself against sh*tty rockets fired out of an open air prison by snipers shooting pregnant women in the stomach.

        1. Christopher

I’m not being ignorant- this conflict is alot more complex than an evil occupier and a poor put upon people. All wars are always unconscionable and atrocities will happen unfortunately (as the killing of the children on the beach unquestionably was).

Just because Israel has a modern military, a missile defense shield and highly effective bomb shelters in every building it does NOT mean that Israel are the aggressors here. Hamas have NO interest in peace for their people- they could have stopped all this and accepted the truce- they didn’t and continued the shelling because they have no concern for human life.

What do people want? Israel to turn off the iron shield, let innocent children die so it makes for good TV and people will then feel sympathy for the Israelis? ?

          1. CK

yeah, are you retarded trying to offer an objective view to the emotional stunted simpletons who equate Israel with evil? Just let them watch their transformer movies, that’s pretty much all they can muster.

          2. Drogg

CK, question, am I emotionally stunted for showing emotion? And then should I be more like you and have no feelings about the murder of children?

          3. Crank

Iron Dome is a defence system. It shoots attacking missiles, while they’re mid-air, before they hit the ground.

What’s in the above video is attack.

So no, don’t turn off Iron Dome. Just stop this other bullshit, and talk.

If talking doesn’t work, talk some more.

If the choices are i) talk more; or ii) kill innocents, I would hope pretty much every human, and every country, would pick the former.

      3. Planet of the Missing Biros

Christopher, Genocide is now widely considered to include the slow destruction of a society through blockades of vital supplies, restricting movement and generally making it impossible for a society to function normally and therefore cease to thrive and continue into future generations.

So you fupp off with your defense of the evil bastards who run the Israeli government and military and all the citizens who whoop and cheer and the wanton destruction of a people weakened and humiliated by the Israelis for decades. They will most likely find that their own aggression will come back on them ten fold from their surrounding neighbours.

        1. Christopher

I don’t know why I bother to debate this issue when all you get on the subject is being called retarded and Israel gets reduced to being “Evil”. I’m out.

          1. ReproBertie

Christopher you don’t debate it. You blame Hamas for the murder of children by Israel and demand that people agree before you can have any sympathy with their viewpoint on Israel’s genocidal activity.

      4. Mikeyfex

UN Genocide Convention 1948, Art 2:
“In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
        (a) Killing members of the group;
        (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
        (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
        (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
        (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. “

      5. Karl Monaghan

So other nations would fire on children playing football on a beach?
        http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/07/16/four-palestinian-children-killed-in-gaza-after-israeli-shells-hit-a-beach_n_5591776.html

I’d like to think Ireland is at least better than that, as well as most other civilised countries.

Israel has no interest in a cease fire. The largely ineffective Hamas rockets (1 Israeli casualty in this round verus 200+ Palestinians murdered by ‘precision’ bombing) give them carte blanche to act like absolute animals. they won’t stop until Gaza is depopulated so they can seize the land and build their own settlements.

        1. Christopher

Oh you mean the gaza that Israel withdrew their army and all their settlers from in 2005? Clearly its the zionists plan to kill all Palestinians and take over their lands.

Stop tarring the entire Israeli army and people based on one obvious atrocity (the killing of the children on the beach which was abhorrent). If you had any criticism for Hamas and their destruction of their own people I would maybe have some sympathy with your viewpoint but anyone that says that Israel have no interest in a ceasefire or peace does not really understand the situation.

          1. mauriac

you lost me by regurgitating the 2005 “pullout ” line.Israel turned Gaza into a prison.they illegally control all borders.if fishermen go more than 500 meters out they are fired upon.drones patrol the sky everyday.no ships are allowed dock to trade.what happens in a prison when conditions are intolerable ?

          2. AhHereLeaveItOut

A ceasefire and peace on their terms, terms which facilitate the continuation of an existence for Palestinians which is at a level of indignity, restriction and underdevelopment which no one else on Earth would be expected to tolerate. Hamas are no angels, and they hold Palestinians hostage in many ways. But in a situation of endless deprivation and desperation, many see them as the only choice while the rest have no voice or power and are too busy trying to survive on a daily basis. It is without any doubt that the ability to drastically improve the situation for both Israelis and Palestinians lies within the hands of the Israelis. End of.

          3. Karl Monaghan

I wish that was just a once off incident, but it’s not. It’s the latest in a long line of atrocities that the Israeli army have committed over the years. It’s not even the first in this phase of the conflict.

Also I’ll point out the Israeli army are back in Gaza.

There are whole swaths of illegal Israeli settlements and their government keep on building them despite international condemnation (but that doesn’t suit your narrative of Israel being completely innocent of any wrong doing, does it?)

The assumption that everyone must equally condemn Hamas in every condemnation of the Israeli army is absolutely ridiculous and complete whatabouttery.

          4. Drogg

Ahh broadsheet I know why you deleted my post and I am sorry for its content, but do you not think if we are going to debate this issue we need to see the real consequences of this Genocide.

            Apologies again.
            Drogg

          1. Karl Monaghan

You’d rather them to be effective and kill people?

The point is that the actual threat posed by the rockets is minimal compared to the claimed threat the Israeli government uses as a cover for their completely disportionate responses. Gives them a nice excuse when they bomb people’s homes, schools and hospitals – ‘oh we’re only defending ourselves it’s those dead kid’s fault for playing near some Hamas lads’.

      6. scottser

t’aint just the palestinians being killed by israeli air strikes lad, there’s also the couple of million syrian refugees in gaza that no-one else would take.

      7. Mé Féin

The full definition of genocide is:
Genocide is the systematic destruction of all or part of a racial, ethnic, religious or national group via the (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; or (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

      1. inotherwords

Targeting schools and hospitals, both of which have been done during this “offensive” is a war crime. Storing rockets in schools is using a loophole but it doesn’t change the fact that schools should not be targeted.

Much has been made of the fact that Hamas refused the proposed ceasefire but they say they weren’t even consulted in it. Regardless of what they believe, they have been democratically elected and need to be invited to the table for discussions. Would you accept a compromise that you had not been invited to give your say in?

The killing and maiming of children in Gaza over the last few days is barbaric. It goes without saying that no mother should see her three month old baby killed, and no father should have to go out with a plastic bag to gather up the remains of his son.

For every article you read in the times of Israel, it’s worth balancing it by reading some Al Jazera, Middle East Eye or tweets from those on the ground in Gaza.

        1. Am I Still on This Island

Launching & storing weapons from civilian areas such as schools is also a War Crime. But don’t let that stop you ignoring it

Those scumbags cheering are no better than the ones who cheered when they saw the footage of 9/11.

    Sanctions against Israel, now.

    1. Drogg

I think we should follow chiles lead ban all Israeli products and expel their ambassador.

    1. Clampers Outside!

Em, “Arabs”… are the Jews not Arabs too, would you count say, Tunisia and Morocco in that? What’s your point exactly.
Like, I heard a bunch of Northern European caucasians shot down a Malaysian passenger airplane too. No one knows exactly who, but sure maybe it;s death to the Northern Europeans time too?

    2. lorcan nagle

So if one group of people does something horrible it’s OK when another group does the same horrible thing?

“Annette Krüger Spitta of the ARD’s (German public broadcasting) TV magazine Panorama states that footage not aired shows that the street surrounding the celebration in Jerusalem is quiet. Furthermore, she states that a man in a white T-shirt incited the children and gathered people together for the shot. The Panorama report, dated September 20, 2001, quotes Communications Professor Martin Löffelholz explaining that in the images one sees jubilant Palestinian children and several adults but there is no indication that their pleasure is related to the attack. The woman seen cheering (Nawal Abdel Fatah) stated afterwards that she was offered cake if she celebrated on camera, and was frightened when she saw the pictures on television afterward”

amazing.that’s a fox news staple for the past 13 years.Chomsky is right that t.v. news is worse than useless.

saw this live.wolf blitzer (former a.i.p.a.c. spokesman) had the cameraman move the angle then never went back to her.the doubly evil thing about the crowd is that they probably came from towns whose original inhabitants were forced to flee to Gaza …

The fact of the matter is that this has never been a black and white war. It’s a complete mess of grey. There is no side anybody should ‘support’, all sides deserve condemnation; from the right wing warmongering government of Bibi Netanyahu, the extremist Zionist settlers, the fundamentalist Hamas who wish every Jew on earth dead and are happy to have Arab children ‘martyred’ for the propaganda points.

The people we need to support are the ordinary Palestinians trapped in a 21st century ghetto by Israel, and used as shields by Hamas. The secular Palestinians who have been pushed to the margins by religious fundamentalists. And the ordinary secular Israelis who don’t subscribe to fundamentalism, but still have rockets rain down on them and have to send their sons and daughters off to war to fight for the Orthodox who are exempt from military service.

Is that not who most reasonable people in the world give their support to?

…ah @kurtz, I can’t decide if you are being naive or just plain disingenuous like the usual lobby assigned to Broadsheet. They never miss an opportunity to point out Israel as a democracy. Bibi has just been returned to power by the majority, you mightn’t like it but that’s what the Israelis voted for. It’s not like they didn’t know what to expect.
The sons and daughters of Israelis are obliged to do military service (unless,as you point out, they are Orthodox Jews). They may be called up at any time but usually this means nothing more onerous than a lot of standing about with only harassing the local Palestinians to break the monotony. Some of the sons and daughters get to use the very latest military hardware. Some even get to fly planes and helicopters and drop their dirty bombs of white phosphorus or flechettes on a captive and demonised population who have little means of fighting back.
But sure, under the Iron Dome it’s fairly normal. Not all the sons and daughters are in fatigues enforcing apartheid of performing ethnic cleansing. Some are attending Rolling Stones concerts others are able to travel the world…what could be more normal than playing Lacrosse for the national team and nobody bats an eyelid of mentions that your cousins are slaughtering innocent children.

    From another blog :-

” I know of an elderly lady in Tel Aviv who lives on the second floor. She’s arthritic and can’t get to the basement when the siren sounds, so she goes to the thickest wall and stands there and prays. But as she doesn’t bleed, there’s no story. “

    1. inotherwords

This is obviously awful, as is the dilemma faced by parents in Gaza of whether to have their children all sleep in one place and risk losing them all, or to spread them around the house so that if a rocket does hit they may not all be killed.

Both Palestine and Israel have committed countless wrongs and there are unfortunately many innocent civilians caught up in this in both sides. However, the current “offensive” is achieving nothing but escalation of an already extremely fragile situation

Woop woop this: The North was the hardest part for Henrys men to take. It was the most staunchly Gaelic, full of powerful warriors in a land that was hard to access. That’s what they said. But in fact Henrys men were a sophisticated army from a land, Britain, which had warred with itself for a thousand years. Expert conquerors. They were executors facing nomads. Hibernia was the Land of Saints and Scholars whose most sophisticated war effort on record was killing the cattle of their neighbours. If you know anything about the weather of this island and the distribution of population in a pre-industrial society it is obvious, the North was full of the weak who it was too embarrassing to just round up and slaughter. It’s a difficult thing to manage the returning heroes who slaughtered families of unarmed peasants isn’t it? But they knocked and burnt the whole island flat. Then they used it as a farm with a fort and wrote whatever they wanted about it while at home their superiors cultivated woop woops. When the aristocracy convinces the paupers that they are whooping with them, rather than at them, it’s easier to facilitate more launches, more whoops for your entertainment. I like whooping to sport and art a bit more than whooping at injured children. But one day the aristocracy whoops so hard the fail to notice the paupers aren’t whooping any more. Meanwhile at home we are not self sufficient. Our representatives foster a culture of little white corruptions and uninformed peoples. The runnings of our country on every level range from inconcise to incoherant. We are fully dependant on our ability to whoop at things like this, the modern version of our very own historic destruction. If an IRA sprang up today and planted a bomb every day for five years theyd have decades worth of supporters of Gaelic culture, while in their abscence we get a culture of whoopers such as this. It’s kind of disgusting.

    1. Comma Entry

Well I just looked at the first few comments, combined with the title, and felt the need to speak out, but it still stands for those whooping. The Israelis are supposed to be the survivors of the holocaust. The media should turn it off like they did with South Africa, but the US supports them and that is the only reason I can see. What can they do if we do not support this? Surely in this world of modern hurt there is some country we aren’t in bed with? Blank all trade and diplomacy with Israel. Israel produces amazingly advanced military technology. Mortars are not even a threat to their country. People don’t tell you that. Google “Mobile Tactical High Energy Laser”.
