Blimey.

Enraged by the BAI decision to uphold a complaint of a non-gay’ imbalance during a radio discussion on same sex marriage

Buzz sez writes:

“”Irish media and its overseeing body is yet again running scarred of bullying solicitors letters from those opposing the referendum..We would like to use this FB page [link below]  to let the world know what is going on with our opponents, our media and our fellow LGBTQ campaigners. We ask that you don’t troll, and keep the debate civilised. Please add your taped up up mouth pic also….”

Not easy taking that off, in fairness.

Man, there is fupp all on there either.

        It’s a bleedin’ Friday afternoon too :(

        Roll on beer o’clock.

“Irish media and its overseeing body is yet again running scarred of bullying solicitors letters from those opposing the referendum”

This is a gross misrepresentation of the Mooney show / BAI episode, and doesn’t show the “Yes” campaign in a very good light.

        1. fmong

A loaded gun? really, you don’t feel that’s a slightly over the top thing to say? and if you do believe that Buzz is holding a “loaded gun” how so? How would you prefer him to express his opinion?

          1. fmong

also I hit send and realised your user name is “Spartacus” ahahahahaha

now there’s a guy who was brave enough to take a stand up against an oppressive establishment OR was he “holding a loaded gun” to his Roman masters???

          2. Spartacus

Relax, it’s just a figure of speech.

His claim is without foundation, and it provides an easy target for anyone on the “No” side. The “Yes” campaign doesn’t need to resort to fabrications and hyperbole.

          3. Spartacus

fmong, if you’re going to debate with me, at least read what I wrote, and not what you*think* I may have written. OK?

        2. Sidewinder

By “loaded gun” do you mean a young woman talking about her potential wedding day? A dangerous weapon indeed. You’d never see straight people at that sort of business.

          1. Spartacus

Snide doesn’t bother me – I’m very thick skinned. I’ve come to regard Sidewinder as one of the more intelligent commenters on here, and a strawman such as this appears to be very much out of character.

homophobia is homophobia, except in this republic where it’s allowed to be peddled in the Irish Times etc.

  3. Humans eh!

The official name for mouth tape is an ‘Iona’

Ok I just made that up. But still!
Crap, I may be sued now.

Ah lads, seriously, shove your hands up you know where and pull yourselves together. Way over the top.

    1. Sidewinder

Really? Imagine if every show that featured a straight couple about to get married also had to feature people advocating divorce?

      1. Blah

One is an accepted institution developed over hundreds and hundreds of years, and formally enshrined and protected in the Constitution.

The other is an historically taboo subject, that is subject to a referendum.

One is political. One is not. BAI has it spot on, as ugly as it might look.

        1. Spartacus

Disgaree with you on BAI. The referendum had not been called when the episode of Mooney was broadcast. They should not have taken the referendum into consideration. This makes their finding deeply flawed.

          1. Blah

I think you’re giving too much weight to the official announcement to hold a referendum. It’s been on the cards at least since the Programme for Government was published in 2011.

          2. Spartacus

It was nothing more than a political promise and an aspiration. It certainly wasn’t a material consideration for them, and it shouldn’t have been a factor in their deliberations. I am firmly of the view that an independent judicial process would overturn their findings on that basis alone. Whether Mooney or RTE have the stomach for that fight is another matter.

  5. I, Diddley

Narcissistic, rabble rousing rubbish. This “campaign” has about as much credibility as that cervical cancer/cameltoe yoke thats going around. Nobody was trying to silence anyone else. The objection related to the LACK of debate for fecks sake. People are completely losing the run of themselves when they sense even the slightest push back against the current gay rights agenda.

Its kinda sad that at this stage I have to say I would vote for gay marriage and that I think the BAI ruling was wrong.

  6. Blah

    Tumblr activism at its worst.

It’s not silencing anyone. It’s saying it is still a matter of political debate. As it should be, in the run-up to a referendum on the issue.

  7. buzzoneill

Also, This item on the mooney Show, was not a political discussion. WHEN the referendum is called all sides will be bound by the BAI regulations during an election / referendum.. As of now it is not.

    1. Joe Malone

You don’t get to choose when something is defined as political discussion – that’s the job of the BAI and they did their job well in this case. They are setting the ground rules early – nothing wrong with that.

Your reaction displays extreme political immaturity akin to throwing toys out of a pram.
You have completely missed the point – nobody wanted to silence the debate, far from it, all the BAI wants is BALANCE. You sound like you don’t want that balance – and that is veering towards fascism. Well done!

      1. Spartacus

The BAI is empowered by the Broadcasting Act 2009. They most certainly are not empowered to define “political discussion” as you put it. They have overstepped the mark in this instance, and we can only hope to see them taken to task for it by RTE.

        1. Joe Malone

Read the Act. They acted within their powers.
Apart from this whole protest being pointless and misguided, it’s particularly silly for buzz to put duct tape over his beard. ..ouch!

      2. Violet

Joe, it’s not a question of whether a given item is political. The BAI code refers to “news and current affairs” programming, and the Mooney Show is clearly a light entertainment show. The BAI seems to be defining balance in a way that precludes any host of any show from expressing an opinion about a matter of social concern, and that’s ludicrous.

          1. Spartacus

All right, Joe. It’s pretty clear by now that you’re just a bullshitter. You’re not convincing anyone with your huff and puff and handwaving.

  8. Brian S

LGBTQ? Can any one just add a random letter onto this now? Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. I get all that, they are different, they can’t just be put under the “gay” banner. But queer? Why add that? Is it some sort of “retaking of the word” away from people who used it in a derogatory way? It just looks like words are getting added on willy nilly (no pun intended)

By the time of the referendum it’ll be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, bent, twinkletoed, abit”off”,afriendofdorothy

Draw the line and make your arguments.

    1. Blah

You’re way behind. I once got a lecture that you should also include A at the end now, for “Allies”.

        1. Corvo

Actually you’re both behind, it’s LGBTTQQIP2sAA. Although the A for ally and Q for qu**r are controversial. A lot would say ally doesn’t belong because allies just support the rest but don’t suffer the same prejudices and while there is a reclaiming of qu**r as an umbrella term, some don’t like it because they still remember it as a particularly harsh slur.
