Fatima mansions, Rialto, Dublin.
You can’t park there.

“This is a new locally led project in Fatima Mansions that your readers might be interested in. The Grow Dome Project is Dublin’s first geodesic grow dome – an intensive all-year-round sustainable food growing tool, a community meeting and education area, an arts and music exhibition space and an iconic artwork in its own right – all at the same time.
Transforming derelict land it will use harvested rainwater and an off-grid hydroponic technique to produce well over 1,000 lettuces per week, every week, all year round. Working with community centres and local business to distribute produce to those most in need, any donations generated will support regular dome festivities.
Website and Facebook went live over the weekend and the launch party is on September 20th; with only the bleedin’ Lord Mayor himself coming down to cut the ribbon :)”
Get them
The Growth Dome Project (Facebook)
worked in the community there a few years ago. Great community and great projects around there
Ah yeh, us Dubs have to bring “bleedin” into something just to show how daycent and harmless we all are. Bit of an own goal there Naill, Try harder the next time please.
Nice to see these local intiatives :) Wishing then the best of luck
+1000
fair play. just make sure them scamps stick to ‘lettuces’, mind ;)
Facebook link is wrong.
Looks impressive too
Nice one
All right, I’m probably going to get in trouble here, but do “those most in need,” really crave lettuces?
I’ll get into trouble here as-well but as long as the do-gooders feel great with themselves, then whats the issue.
It’s a quick growing, not widely disliked vegetable. I don’t see the issue.
You wouldn’t get that many carrots and It’s not like you could have a chicken or dairy farm in there.
Though I did see a demonstration from a guy trying to sell a hydroponics chamber off brick lane a few years ago talking about the weight of strawberries that could be grown. In retrospect, he may have been talking in code.
It’s not very nutritious, nor particularly versatile. Which is probably what Odis is getting at I imagine.
Except that lettuce is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.
Well, it depends on the type. Light-leaved lettuce isn’t particularly nutritious, maybe I shouldn’t have been as vague as I was. Are you are it’s one of the most nutritious foods on the planet? I may have been grossly misinformed. Seems quite a claim to me!
Actually meant to say fruit/veg/berry/etc. not food. Obviously they won’t be farming fish or honey or whatever in the dome.
Anyway..

Spot on. lettuce has so much goodness. eat it if its green
well you are well-placed to answer that yourself Odious given your special character
Well billy, whilst I like lettuce, I’m not mad for it.
I’d say my favourite vegetable would be onions, followed by frozen peas, followed by potatoes. I’m fairly keen on tomatoes but they are technically a fruit, though I don’t suppose that’s an issue here.
Does that answer your question?
haha i was thinking more of those most in need and their special requirements. for example asparagus is supposed to make sperm taste more palatable to those who consume it and perhaps you are among those? but hey of course all they are actually grow there is lettuce, better to fixate on that morsel
I’d have confess to having a frightfully “Nigel Slaterish” penchant, for home grown purple sprouting broccoli, but that’s about it.
Anyone I have seen promoting this (via Facebook anyway) is the typical middle class left-wing liberal type.
perish the thought that there are people of some moral standing yet remaing at large. how simply dare they!
Maybe you should make more right-wing working-class reactionary friends.
Damn those liberals!
They are awesome, aren’t they?
And?
…they could probably sell those without going further than Ranelagh.
I’ve replied saying I meant to say fruit/veg etc and not food but I posted links so it is waiting approval.
You can’t grow with a geodisic dome:
