Why did it take them 3 years to publish this stat? And where did it even come from??
I’m not sure, but if you’re interested, here’s a thread on Boards.ie talking about cycling statistics:
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057144946
It links to “Report on trends in mode share of people crossing the Canal Cordon 2006 to 2011”
http://www.nationaltransport.ie/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Canal_Cordon_Counts_06_11_Final.pdf
Which has an increase in cyclists from 4,839 to 6,870. I guess they added the Dublin Bikes numbers to that.
The text and photo in the Examiner article are in a couple of other papers today too.
What new bicycle paths?
One by the airport for starters, albeit a shared one.
In the city?
They’ve put in a ton recently around my area but only on roads that don’t really actually need them.
There’s a marvellous one, made of toughened glass on the surface of the Liffey.
Good news then.
I hope Dublin City Council can get a little praise when they actually do something right.
No chance. This is all Owen Keegan’s fault for forcing motorists to leave their cars at home and be exposed to all manner of weather and toxic fumes. Also he’s making ordinary decent Dubliners have to deal with 82% more footpath cycling and red light ignoring.
Yeah we should eradicate cycling and solve the toxic fume problem once and for all
If all the cars are at home where are the fumes coming from?
Hopefully the government can react to this response by maintaining cycle paths properly, laying down more cycle lanes which are not shared (safer), enforce the highway code for all modes of transport, and get tough on those who break it. There are a lot of people I know who will not cycle as they still deem it too dangerous.
The cycle lanes are useless unless they are clear. Currently they are mainly filled with parked cars and broken glass.
I moved to Dublin about a month ago. I cycle, drive and walk depending on my needs for the day. There are arseholes in all categories but drivers are definitely the most dangerous and cyclists definitely the most at risk.
