On this day in 1979, Eamonn Casey and Michael Cleary were the warmup act for Pope John Paul II in Ballybrit, Galway.

They wanted to bind us together.

He told us he loved us.

Good times.

    Great days.

Anyone who was 20 or 30 and worked hard back then is sitting pretty. If only they could forewarn their offspring about how bad things would get in New Ireland.

Allow me to provide the full and uncensored version….

Great days. for abusive priests who could kiddie fiddle with impunity. Meanwhile in Rome, their banker was robbing them as the kiddies were fiddled…. In July 1982, Paul Marcinkus Marcinkus was associated in multiple reported financial scandals in league with the Masonic Lodge and named associated of the Italian mafia.

Anyone who was 20 or 30 and worked hard back then is sitting pretty. Except if you were a single mother, an abuse victim, a child of an unwed parent, an altar boy in the church of a pedophile…. the list goes on….. and you will never get an apology for any of the suffereing that this institution caused you.

If only they could forewarn their offspring about how bad things would get in New Ireland. Yeah, kids, we won’t lie. It is still bad:
The clowns with the hats and the dresses still think they are in charge
They have made more inroads into developing nations so are free to carry on the cycles of abuse that were stopped in Europe and America in the 1990s and 2000s
The Vatican still has massive reserves of wealth and lectures us about living humble lives and giving to the poor
The Church and state are still massively intertwined like brambles and ivy
