Sinn Féin staged a walkout this evening after Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett was accused of bias by Deputy Mary Lou McDonald.

Deputy McDonald refused to withdraw a remark about the Ceann Comhairle “being deliberately disruptive” and making a “biased intervention“.

It was like 1922 all over again.

Back home in plenty of time for Spotlight on BBC One tonight.

What, Barrett being bias as he always is? You do know that the CC must be neutral in mediating debate but Barrett rarely is. That’s an affront to our democratic process. The man needs to sent out himself.

Ah now, they’ll be accusing Sean of succumbing to the Dark Side any minute now.

They broke the rules, the Ceann Comhairle pointed it out, he was accused of bias, he threatened to eject MLM unless she withdrew the accusation of bias and she flounced out, followed by a retinue of SFers.

Is there a pattern here, listen to this car crash radio yesterday between a senior SFer and the BBC. Seriously, you’ll cringe (and long before the SFers accuse the BBC of bias)

(Go down to Part 1 and Part 2, and sit back with the popcorn)

I think he was being deliberately disruptive of Mary Lou’s speech because her speech was basically destroying Fine Gae’s budget policies. If you watch how this Ceann Comhairle, Sean Barrett, has behaved towards the opposition over the years, there are possible grounds for claiming he is biased in favor of FineGael and Labour in the Dail chamber. The Ceann Comhairle, Sean Barrett is a long standing Fine Gael politician, and I think that it’s ridiculous that the sitting government can nominate the Ceann Comhairle (who is suppose to be like a referee without bias and impartial). The Ceann Comhairle often determines if certain members get more speaking time, he is in control of how the discourse is distributed, and if you watch closely over the years, Richard Boyd Barrett has been shouted down and heckled quite a lot, and the Ceann Comhairle has not intervened. They should give to role to an independent politician and get rid of this guy., haven’t people like him bled enough out of the Irish people?

For my sins, I watch enough Dáil and House of Commons debate to know that Seanie knew exactly what he was doing. The rules are the rules but one can be very particular about when one applies them.

Also, what’s with this right justified comment box?

…I think Seanie just wants to register that he is now arrogant thug in residence now that Big Phil has vacated the position….no need Seanie…we know…except you are an irrelevance about to become even more irrelevant.

McGrath, the Fianna Fáil spokesman, spoke directly to Noonan for the entirety of his speech, and not a puff out of the ceann comhairle, so she had a point. That said she was a bigger eejit to refuse to withdraw the remarks. Political theatre.

If she believed he deliberately interrupted her for no reason other than to interrupt her, it shows she has integrity and courage to not back down.
“Withdraw your remarks” me arse. Pretend you never said them. Eh, no.

I watch them from time to time, and I never see whoever’s talking addressing that pr*ck directly, as he wanted to be there.

She kept her cool there with that odius cretin of a man.
Ceann Comhairle – he who no one takes seriously in the real world.
I’d have told him in no uncertain terms to go and fupp himself.

I have to say, she always impresses me.
Articulate, intelligent, level headed, ballsy.. Good going Mary Lou.

      1. Just sayin'

Integrity and courage? Don’t be ridiculous. it was a stunt by SF on a day when there were no protests outside Leinster House.

Maybe the eye should be on the clerk of the Dáil, or acting clerk. He is the one who advises the ceann at all times.

In Northern Ireland yesterday, the Sinn Fein speaker Mitchell McLaughlin expelled a unionist from the chamber after the unionist had challenged the impartiality of the speaker. The unionist had tried to get a topic discussed and when his request was rejected because the topic was held to be irrelevant, the unionist pointed out that a nationalist had their topic discussed even though it was equally irrelevant. The unionist didn’t get an opportunity to apologise, and was expelled…..for 30 days (it seems the unionist can return before that if he apologises)

And a few hours later, the above happens in the Dail. Karma is very quick these days.
