Yes She Ceann

Sinn Fein Deputy Leader Mary Lou Mc Donald TD and Aengus O’ Snodaigh outside Leinster House this afternoon.

Ms McDonald returns following a sit-in the Dáil chamber last week in protest at her expulsion by the Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett. The party intends to put down a motion of no confidence in the Fine Gael stalwart.

Bold.

Few deputies can escape Seán Barrett’s tongue or temper in Dáil (Fiach kelly, Irish Times)

She lost me when she said today she was considering going in to the Dail anyway – but decided not to because she didn’t want to get the ushers in trouble.

Get over yourself Mary Lou, you made your protest, rightly in my view, last week – grow up now and get on with it.

Why is it permitted that an elected representative is blocked from the Dail by the votes of the government parties. Is this not utterly undemocratic?

Agreed. Totally messed up. And the vote of no confidence will go nowhere as well. No redress options in place at all.

I’m on the fence about it – I’ve no problem with a parliament voting to discipline a member. Far better that than it being just the call of the speaker. But that’s ignoring the utterly emasculated nature of our parliament of course, which means that every decision it makes is a government decision…

I’m not sure I agree with her over Barrett though, I think he’s just weak as opposed to whipped – because he’s government-appointed he feels he’s just there to keep time, when really his job should be to make the minister stay standing until they’ve answered the poxy question or produced evidence that it’s subject to state secrecy rules.

Freely elected CC by secret ballot a legal ban on the party whip for all but finance bills is what’s needed.

        1. Am I Still on this Island?

Yeah, but say that the governing party just wants to ban an opposition TD because they’re effective?

Why should the Ceann Comhairle be a TD?
Weren’t the TD’s all elected by their constituents to represent their constituencies, and then this group of employees come up with their own rules to make one of them the referee – pretty much a TD from the largest government party.

In something so trivial as a soccer match the ref is not affiliated to any of the teams on the pitch.

If you can’t discipline member effectively then that leaves it open for individuals to undemocratically disrupt the business of the Dail.

  2. Mr. T.

When a Ceann Comhairle makes it about themselves, they must go. Barrett has been very obviously biased towards Fine Gael and he really should resign out of respect for the institution and the citizen. Fine Gael are attempting to stifle debate in our parliament which is unconstitutional.

Burton never answered the questions put to her and the CC didn’t refer them back to the Minister for reply at a later date. That breaches the rules of the Dail.

But all we hear from single message Irish media is what a naughty little girl ML is.

don’t interrupt the circle jerk. Standing Orders aren’t things Shinners feel they have to respect.
Similarly Bodgbollox wouldn’t know what they are

Of all the problems that we have – financial crises, housing crises, unemployment crises – a hissy fit from ML is the bloody least of it. ggrrr….

What about all the rapists that Sinn Fein moved to other parishes? Why isn’t she protesting about that?
