Haven’t watched the video but the thought of everyone in the top picture actually being Minions is assuming me on this Friday arvo.

    First thoughts…
    1. It’s HIM!
    2. Jeez, the aggression here is stark. Were there kids at this event?? There’s a always a risk that a peaceful gathering might ‘kick off’ as Ross Kemp would say. Is this the time that the Garda was hit in the eye?

    1. Medium Sized C

This happened after I passed. I don’t remember seeing kids. And I had a good bitter look around.

    Imagine being that poor man?
Bad enough being a Guard in that situation, but a Guard that looks like Inda?!

    1. Mikeyfex

      Maybe they’re footballers?

(i play football before the red thumbs come rolling in) (oh wait, I’m not on thescore)

  4. Clampers Outside!

Shouting ‘peaceful protest’ and repeatedly ignoring requests by 59.356478 million minions telling you to get off the road and onto the footpath is not preaceful protest.

    Just sayin’

Oh God, this is one of the most annoying things about the protests. Someone decided that putting your arms in the air and chanting peaceful protest automatically makes it a peaceful protest.

In a lot of the videos at the meter installations I saw people shouting “hands in the air lads” while pushing up against the Guards.

  5. Just sayin'

Scum looking for confrontation with the Guards. I’m surprised this even made it on to the net. The protestors are usually more discreet in posting material that makes them look like victims.

Thanks for protesting on my behalf lads.

Any chance you could do it again next week, or at least until a few of these lads hit themselves hard enough on the ground to lose the ability to type, cheers.

That pushing to the back of the elderly man at 21 secs, is just thuggery.

If the request is that people are to go onto the footpath, and they’re not doing what they’re told, you can’t just fling them about.. especially from behind, where they don’t see it coming and can’t brace themselves for the push.

Some of them are so incompetent and untrained. Would they not send them back to Templemore for a refresher course every now and then?

  8. Artemis

Young Enda is quite handsome though.
I don’t think I’d mind him gently taking control of the situation there.. Hmmm mmm

Jesus some of those lads are literally throwing themselves onto the ground. Future professional footballers perhaps although methinks they’d refuse to play for any side other than Celtic.

4 principles of crowd riot control:

    1. Justification

    2. Prevention

    3. Legal requirement

    4. Minimum use of force

Were these fulfilled in AGS actions against protesters on O’Connell Bridge?

1: fulfilled: the protesters are in breach of Sec. 9 of the CRIMINAL JUSTICE (PUBLIC ORDER) ACT, 1994

2: not fulfilled: AGS allowed these persons to convene and did not attempt to inform the crowd verbally or otherwise that they were in breach of the law and facing removal. They allowed the blockade to grow with 2/3 motorcycle gardaí monitoring, despite there being c. 600 gardaí on duty in the city at the time. Only when the situation was actually dissipating and the crowd was beginning to thin did they move in heavily and decisively on those resolved to stay. Thus, this was punishment and not prevention.

Also, can anyone clarify if a dispersal notice (usually via loudhailer) was issued before the gardaí went in on the bridge? This is a requirement in any dispersal action.

3: fulfilled: AGS were entitled to clear the bridge of protestors by law (as 1. above).

4: not fulfilled: AGS use of force was disproportionate. Use of canine units was provocative, pushing from behind and other behaviour witnessed in this video was contrary to best practice and actions were disproportionate to the level of threat/illegality posed by the protestors. The law of which they were in contravention carries a penalty fine of £200 [sic] on conviction and does not carry a custodial sentence, making it very low on the legal hierarchy of crimes. It should be noted that no garda units accompanied DFB and Ambulance units to Butt bridge where at least one offence (Road Traffic Act 1961, sec. 106.3) was committed which carries a custodial sentence of up to 6 months.

So in summary, 2/4 of the principles for carrying out a CRC dispersal action were fulfilled. Garda training and effectiveness in these situations is proving less and less reliable. On the plus side, that guy really, really looks like Enda.

Finally, as the precedent has been set in other cases, if the protesters had formed a continuous line of people crossing the road (or dancing as below), they would have (with questionable justification) been acting within the law (just about) and thus justification would have been brought into doubt in the above scenario.

Best rebuttal I’ve ever read on Broadsheet. I wouldn’t have expected anything else from a windbag such as yourself, tbh.

        Extra citations:
        1. I was present and observed both the occupation of O’Connell Bridge and the aftermath of the hit and run on Butt Bridge for a time. Despite how dramatic it looks here it was pretty boring, just a bunch of people walking and sitting and chanting. I left the scene prior to arrival of AGS but saw the riot vans flying down Dame Street as I was walking home. Obviously there were your standard Republican flags/people present but there were also a lot of very normal people including the ladies in pink, an old woman in a wheelchair, and a young woman who sat down and began to meditate (at least that’s what it looked like) with a garda motorbike beside her. There was no sign of organisers running the show and people coming back from Merrion square stuck around for a while to see what was going on and intermixed with the occupiers.
        2. The Tom Clonan article for a little while back will summarise some of the basis behind what I’m saying here but this is standard CRC

drug dealing, penalty points dodging, law breaking, atm scamming violent thugs. and the protestors are nearly as bad!

  12. Walter-Ego

Reminds me of the Ian Thomlinson incident in London a few years back who died as a result of heavy handed police force?

    1. Quint

Difference here is that the €3 a week protestors here are falling to the ground so easily they make the average cheating Premiership footballer look like a beacon of virtue
