Who Are They?

at

iphone

Careless loved-up hot people.

That’s who.

Brian writes:

I found this iPhone 6 (top of the line yoke) in the back of a taxi in Dundrum [Co Dublin]. Taxi driver said it was his, but when I turned it on the guy on the screen was a) a different colour b) decades younger. I know the phone owner’s first name, so anyone who can tell me the owner’s name can arrange collection. The phone has siri turned off so I can’t ask it any further details. The owner is not Irish, phone is not in English.

Anyone?

I’d love to know how the conversation went after the taxi driver claimed it was his and you called his bluff and kept it,,,,fair play though

    1. Brian Byrne

I show him picture on phone.

“Oh sorry, I have my phone here” *holds up Samsung landfill Android shitpiece*

“Give it to me and I will drop it in to carriage office”

I close door and LOL heartily, as I am wont to do.

      1. CARLOSFANDANGO

Ah you have to love the auld Dub Taxi drivers.. Very honest lads altogether. To think he was going to go out of his way & drop it to the office too. Aww..

So you broke the law and the taxi driver didn’t – he was legally obliged to keep the phone and hand it in to the Gardai. He may have intended breaking the law but you actually did when you stole property from his taxi. Why have you not handed it into the Gardai as the law states all lost property in taxis should be. Good man.

        1. Soundings

How did Brian “steal” the phone. If he intends to “permanent deprive” the owners of their property, then posting this stuff on BS probably wasn’t the way to go!

          1. AliG

Under the law he stole the phone from the person the law states has the right to possession of it. Its the law, simple as that. it may not be right but under the law he stole the phone from the taxi. You cannot just take property from a private hire vehicle because you suspect it does not belong to the owner of the vehicle. i hope that explains how he stole the phone which it appears he has still not handed into the Guards.

        2. Bobby Rwanda

You’re talking absolute b*llocks, @AliG. Brian had a reasonable suspicion that the property would not be returned to its rightful owner. By the sounds of things, the taxi driver was *about* to break the law so Brian was diligent in taking it himself. If in any doubt, the taxi driver could have suggested that both of them go to the nearest lost property Garda Station (i.e. Store Street) and both would be assured that the phone would be at the very least registered as a lost item w/ the Gardaí.

          1. AliG

See above post. it is not about what he thinks the taxi man may have done. He stole the phone from the taxi and has not handed it in to the Gardai as he was suspicious that the person in legal possession of the phone and who was the owner or lease holder of the taxi was not going to hand it in to the Guards. You cannot just take stuff from other peoples cars.

          2. Bobby Rwanda

Absolute nonsense. There’s a bang of misinformed argument off your spiel here. It’s what you typically get from a first year law student that thinks he/she knows it all.

        3. madouveh on the dole

shut you fooking hole before I hit ya a slap. You’re with a general cunce and a troll cunce, either way. bore off.

Lost my own phone a year ago and found out then the Carriage Office doesn’t deal with Lost Property anymore, but I’m yer man would’ve taken it to the local station once he realised his mistake…

        1. mike

Lost a phone in a taxi and discovered the same thing, as have friends. You gotta check some disprate collection of garda stations.

Basically, NO centralised system for taxi lost property exists in Ireland. Shocking in this online day and age.

So, given the almost zero chance of anyone tracking down lost property given to one of these stations, it is no wonder taxi drivers feel like hanging on to items.

  2. Brian Byrne

Hey it’s in Spanish, the rest of it says stuff in Spanish.

If you own an iPhone, you can set it so Siri will give out the owners contact information even when locked. You just press the home button and say “who does this phone belong to”. This lad did not have this set up.

Also that’s a flash reflection on his missus’ head, she doesn’t have a receding hairline

  3. dylad

Well it clears up the mystery as to where the missing stuff in Dublin Taxis goes: ‘The carriage office’.

    1. Party mark

The carriage office is where it used to go to if it was an honest driver. It goes to the garda station now.

  4. Soundings

    Matt Dillon and Sarah Silverman?

Sorry, don’t know, but good on you for posting it, and having the moxy to stand up to the taxi driver.

  5. Mark

Lots of hair. Guarantee she’s a nightmare to share with, you know, with the ‘do n all. Balls of the stuff in corners, behind doors etc.

  6. pissedasanewt

I’d hand it into the Garda if that where lost property goes, as its unlikely they will check Broadsheets. They might go to the Garda and they will say no phone has been handed in.

Is there a cental Garda lost property section or do you just have to hope you go into the same station as a bit of lost property was handed into?

  7. comeonnow

So Brian, finder of phone, do you not trust the Gardai either? Those comments who say you are in the wrong by holding on to this phone, legally they are correct. Morally, they are correct. How do any of us know what you will do if your one odd stab in the dark shot of finding non English speakers on an English site known mainly to residents doesn’t pan out? There is a central lost and found for the city on O’Connell St by the bus office, or take it to the Garda ffs.

    1. paul m

why dont you ring the gardai and report a law breaking crime of a stolen phone taken against the law from the back of a taxi, cite this thread for evidence of the law breaking and phone stealing event that took place in the back of a a private vehicle. be sure to mention that although the driver may have intended to break the law and steal the phone from the back of his taxi that he was not in fact the law breaker who stole the phone from the back of his taxi.

      1. AliG

I would if i knew the details of the person who stole the phone. It is amazing that this person took the phone from a taxi and has not handed it in yet you seem to think that is ok. Whatever the intentions of the driver it does not explain why this person has not handed in the phone. Under the law all property found in a taxi has to be handed in. Do you think that law is wrong?

        1. Brian Byrne

          Hello AliG

As I have a life to lead myself so was unable to threadsit this all day.

The salient facts are as follows, please feel free to read them s-l-o-w-l-y and draw your own conclusions.

          • I found the phone in the taxi as I was getting out
          • I said oh there’s a phone here – my intention was to give it to the taxi driver
          • The taxi driver upon seeing the iPhone 6 said instantly “oh that’s mine”
          • I turned it on and said “is that you” (1% battery)
          • He said yes
          • I said right well you’re a large mid-forties black Nigerian, this chap on the phone is a sprightly young chap in his mid 20s
          • He still insisted it was his
          • I then pointed at the crappy Android landfill device in the centre console and said, there’s your phone. He says “oh here’s my phone” or words to that effect.
          • I then closed door and LOLed as detailed earlier
          • Taxi driver then drove off and left me with “his” €600-€800 iPhone

          Other:

          Siri is off
          It’s in Spanish

Given the above details, can you make a reasonable assumption that the taxi driver was going to “hand it in”?

I made the assumption that no, the taxi driver had already made an attempt to claim the item as his, when it was clearly not. The fact that he did not pursue me down the road for his €6-800 phone suggests that my assumption was correct. I stood there looking at the phone while he drove off.

Here are the efforts I have made to find the owner of the phone

I plugged it into iTunes to get the handset name
I rang the operator of the SIM in the phone and left my details – sadly they cannot call the owner due to data protection. I think he is a tourist.
I posted an advert on adverts.ie for €5 to identify the owner, no dice – just people wanting to buy it knowing it wasn’t theirs
I posted the image to reddit, no dice
I contacted that Spanish language group, no dice
I searched twitter for “lost phone” Dundrum etc

If I leave it in with the Guards there is significantly less chance that the owner will ever get it back. Meteor told me to hold onto it for a few days and the owner might get a new SIM and be notified on signing up. If there is no response, I will hand it into the guards.

I have no intention of keeping this phone. If I want something, I’ll buy it, I can afford it. One of the many benefits of not hanging around lecturing people on the web all day, you get to earn a living.

          1. Brian Byrne

Also I set up an open WiFi network but it ain’t connecting, as far as I can see there is no way the “find my iPhone” will work.

  8. General Lee Nice

If it is a Spanish phone and Siri is on, then surely you should ask Siri in Spanish who the owner is?
¿A quién no este teléfono pertenece? (Google translate)

I would imagine you would have given it to the taxi driver if he was not so dishonest in the first place. I think you did the right thing trying to find the owner yourself first.

  9. Mike Baldwin

Jesus H. Will you quite the whinging?? He’s trying to return the gd phone ffs. You know what Brian, just don’t bother in future, keep the moaners appeased. AliG, get some Valium in your life….

  10. Kieran NYC

    Buncha hair-sniffin’ scamps.

Hope they get it back. Losing stuff on holiday always seems much worse somehow.
