I’m in the minority here, but i think McGregor is a complete gobsh*te. All this obnoxiousness and crass materialism sets him up as a really poor role model for kids. I know that’s part of sports like that, but he comes across as a next level idiot.

    Cue “typical Irish begrudgery etc”

…well, you and Senator Catherine Noone and possibly Michelle ‘The Fornicator’ …but a typical Irish begrudging minority alright.

You just put “crass materialism” and McGregor’s fame together…. do explain that one to me, please. Is he selling action figures now?

Btw, I think the guy is a million times more articulate than the average soccer or rugby player, in fairness to him. Beyond that, I see no difference between the buzz of this MMA sport and the others mentioned. But where’s the “crass materialism”…. crass by what standard? Or is it just that you don’t like it….

I would totally buy his action figure, then when the kids are gone to bed, i’d pull out the miniature WWF cage match ring and have mini mcgregor versus mini bruce lee match up.

Certainly more articulate than the average soccer player, but there are shaved monkeys who fill that niche as well. Rugby players tend to be far mroe coherent though.

Regardless of his act, I find McGregors patter to be a bit contrived. It’s like he has researched big words and is determined to use them even if they are very very slightly out of context. It makes him slightly less articulate.

I blinked for a crucialy second while reading that and thought you were talking about Russell Brand

It is a bit contrived, he’s there to make himself his money, plus it’s a sport with a cult of personality placed on its participants more than in any team sport, so I’ll forgive him a bit of that.

          When I say he’s articulate, I’m not saying he’s a genius :)

Well you aren’t alone, I got a headache from the ad for the RTE2 documentary. Jesus, feckin ego on him! I know it gets you more money to play up to the pantomime villain thing, but god almighty, his head looked ready to explode

OK, I know it is just US commercial TV promoting one of their own shows, but watching the big NFL game, the regular ad was for “The Irish Muhammed Ali – Conor McGregor”.

It might as well be an Irish lad making it big.

    Good luck to him.

He never uses contractions should as “I’m” or “They’d” when he speaks.

Neither did Data the android from Star Trek…

By Jove, I think I’ve cracked it!
