The Queensland Irish Association in Brisbane, Australia
The Queensland Irish Association was founded in 1898 and has been in its Elizabeth Street headquarters, Tara House, since 1920.
However it’s understood extensive renovations in recent years have contributed to the QIA’s money troubles, with debts believed to be at least $3 million.
Musician Sarah Calderwood from Brisbane Irish band Sunas said the changes had backfired spectacularly.
“They were trying to bring in younger people, but they basically turned the ground floor of the club into an RSL [Returned Services League clubs for ex-servicemen and women]],” she said.
“It was big screens, keno… they lost that classic Céad Míle Fáilte, the ‘100 Thousand Welcomes’ that the club is classically known for.”

Thanks Darren Conlon
What does one do in an Irish Club?
Drink excessive amounts of beer, hold grudges, bitch about the government and then reminsce about stinger bars and the Den all the while giving in jokes that the Aussies wouldnt get
‘Ah sure yer a grand ride’
Talk about Kolakowski and Zizek, recite Joyce, drink Cavan Cola and in Australia at any rate sleep snug in the pouch of a red Kangaroo
Never any intention of ever going to Australia. Probably be full of annoying “Ive been here ages let me show you where the best bars are” heads and people who were too thick to get jobs back home.
I’d a friend come home a few Christmases ago and ask, “how do I still live in this shithole?”(Dublin). He lived in a cabin in a town in the Northern Territory with a 95% male population building houses for miners.
Everyon should visit Australia if only for the experience of bounding across the desert snug in a Kangaroos pouch.
throw a few bags of white powder into his luggage next time he goes back to his sacred holy land
A couple of rashers or an apple will have a similar effect.
you cant smoke an apple silly
LOL
It’s a wonderful place. The open plains, the red earth, the bounding kangaroos.
All I remember of the Irish Club was the vile green toilets that matched the walls, an RSL would be an improvement
The development value of that property is worth a lot more than 3 million these days. Now they have a compelling reason to sell.
