What you may need to know:

1. A young family are terrorised by a malevolent presence in their home.

2. 20th Century Fox continues to stripmine its back catalogue for all it’s worth. A Shane Black-helmed reboot of the reboot of Predator (1987) is coming down the pipe.

3. If it ain’t broke, why not fix it anyway? This trailer has quite a nice old school vibe, and director Gil Keenan seems to have used a lot of practical effects. But really, what’s the point?

4. The usually-dependable Jared Harris appears to have based his character on Alan “Dere’s more to Oireland dan dis” Partridge.

5. The original Poltergeist (1982) has quite a history. Dominique Dunne (Dana) was strangled by her boyfriend in the year of its release, and Heather O’Rourke (Carol Anne) was just 12 years old when she died in 1988.

6. It also killed director Tobe Hooper’s career stone dead. Rumours of heavy-handed interference from producer and co-writer Steven Spielberg and substance abuse issues resulted in Hooper eventually capitalising on Poltergeist’s success with naked space vampire megaflop Lifeforce (1985).

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: “They’re here.” Again.

Release Date: July 31
