Veronica Guerin in 1991

In Dublin the Shinners have said,
That we shouldn’t remember the dead,
And a journalist shot,
Is sad but they’ll not,
Let the plans for her name go ahead.

The only reason to object to this is…who wants a mundane piece of construction like a flyover in memory of someone?
I believe Guerin is suitably and respectively commemorated in the gardens of Dublin Castle.

    Oh and shurrup Shinners.

While the argument that it could create a hierarchy of victims could be made, surely, given the fact that the construction is built in the area she was murdered would give weight to naming the flyover after her?

In terms of hierarchy of victims, I mean it’s not like they’ve made a film about all of the other victims of gangland violence. The hierarchy has (sadly) already been established.

We may as well call it the Veronica Guerin flyover in the same way we talk about The Aviva Stadium Landsdowne Road Nua.

Finally, why don’t they come out and say what they are really worried about? It’s not hierarchy of victims, rather a hierarchy of heroes. People who stood up to intimidation from masked men with guns. What they’re afraid of is that after that we’ll name a street or a bridge or a hard shoulder after one of the Disappeared. They’re afraid that we’ll name a new Liffey bridge after Jean McConville or post office after Gerry McCabe. and that will serve as a continuous reminder to people of what Sinn Féin were (or are).

They’re afraid of their own legacy.

And it gives the indo a chance to throw this no story around again.

“Ms Guerin’s name resurfaced in the media in recent weeks after Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams openly joked about placing a gun to the head of the editor of the Irish Independent during an after-dinner speech in New York.

The remarks by the Louth TD sparked outrage both at home and abroad and led to accusations that he was making a veiled threat to press freedom.

Mr Adams’s attack on the Irish Independent was subsequently defended by his deputy leader, Mary Lou McDonald.”

Her death convulsed the nation, it might be a bit crap to have a flyover named after her but it is close to the murder scene. She was a brave person whose death changed the way the underbelly of society is policed in this country. Sinn Fein are missing a trick opposing this, it reminds everyone of their roots.

    Hierarchy of victims….

So when the Shinners start shoving out their own “hero” types we can tell them all to fupp off and flush that idea down the fuppin’ loo ya found it in?

    Sound.

    I can live with that.
