Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin and Senator Averil Power

In Fianna Fáil’s victory hour,
The atmosphere turned a bit sour,
They picked up a seat,
But it looks like defeat,
As the party is left without Power.

Averil is self promoting. She’s using the best opportunity to propel her and give Martin and FF a good kicking. She wasn’t going to win the selection convention to run in the next election so she used the lacklustre FF referendum campaign (which to be frank nobody even noticed or cared about) and the post-result positivity to give FF a huge kick in the balls.

Martin looks incredibly weak as a result of this and Averil just comes across as an opportunist.

Not if another member follows suit, which I believe is highly likely before the election campaign. The lure of being an elected Independent is strong.

Which other member? Ken Curtin? FFS he’s a nobody.

There are 20,000 members in the party, there’s probably someone resigning every week over some spat.

All she has done, in reality, is confirm our suspicions that she is a tacky careerist.

Why would a principled person join Fianna Fail? It’s one of the most corrupt parties in Europe.

Bertie Ahern telling a tribunal that he won all his dodgy money on the horses. Charles Haughey and Ben Dunne, etc. etc.

What would you prefer – a representative who is not ambitious? Which I don’t think is entirely the case here.

        1. rotide

I would like a politician who was ambitious for the people, rather than for herself.

          1. Spaghetti Hoop

I would have thought they are inter-twined…but yes, I get your point…this is Irish politics where ‘ambition’ has different connotations than my positive perception of the word.

    Bitter Senator is bitter……
it’s a pity they all didn’t come home to vote when the referendum was on to get rid of the upper house!

c’mere to me….so she was nominated to the seanad by FF (actually via MMartin). She now leaves FF , if she had any integrity wouldnt she just resign her place in the seanad?

whilst i agree with her stance on FF and their (in the main) hiding behind skirts on the MarRef surely she should relinquish all favours she has received from them? That would be integrity.

but its great to see FF in-fighting, all the same. Smug ballockses

    Averil announced she couldn’t stay
Really because she didn’t get her own way
    They choose the son
    Of an infamous one
    Much to the Indo’s dismay
