The West Australian

Jonathan writes:

From yesterday’s edition of the ‘West Australian’, the (somewhat right wing) newspaper of record in this part of Oz. This letter was printed unchallenged and with no view from the opposing side. Personally I read this in the voice of an irritated Alf Stewart. Great that the Irish result is stirring up so much debate around the world though.

Tony Abbott?

Bill Shorten?

It’s a letter to the editor from a member from the public, why does there need to be immediate balance printed alongside it?

Write a letter in response if you want to see something in the way of balance, then see if they print it. Instead of whinging here.

Newspapers can take an editorial slant on issues if they choose; you don’t necessarily have to agree with them (or buy the newspaper, for that matter).

This is pretty much the only newspaper in West Australia. My original post was somewhat tongue in cheek but I suppose that doesn’t come across. Anyway everyone just chill out, what’s the big deal! So much unnecessary anger…!

OP is getting confused. Not all of real life is part of a referendum debate or requires balance.

I think such comments are taking the p*** out of the ridiculous demands for “balance*” that RTE was forced into because they are spineless

*aka bring in some rabid conservatives

The reason for taking the photo and uploading was to highlight how Ireland’s result is having far reaching effects. You’re the one whinging!

The great equality war between the kangaroos and the wallabies (or as they were known by devout Christian kangaroos at the time, kangaroos who had made a conscious choice to be a different species and could if they wanted just be kangaroos and get all the rights associated with that.)

A quick Google search reveals he’s a priest and Latvian, neither group being very tolerant of gay marriage

I’d say quite a few (long-suffering) Latvian gays might probably verify his point actually

Looks like it was written by a covert pro-equality provocateur channelling a stage-Australian rightwing rural nutjob to show how ridiculous the anti-equality position is. Well done to her/him/etc.
