Paul Cullen, of the Irish Times, reports:

“Tallaght hospital has expressed regret over a delay which resulted in a 102-year-old woman spending more than 26 hours on a trolley in its emergency department this week.”

“The woman, who has a history of heart attack, arthritis and high blood pressure, was given a blood transfusion while on the trolley in the emergency department.”

Ok, well if they expressed regret then that’s fine. No need to put forward a realistic plan to prevent this situation occurring.

The HSE and that idiot Leo need to stop jumping to quick wins and put forward a long term plan to resolve the disaster of the health service we have. A 10-20-30 year plan, commissioned by someone other than the civil service, with targets and dedicated roles to achieve change. The last plan was a 3 yr plan….. ?? What’s the point. Sure you could be on a trolley that long.

so you make a 10 year plan, then the government changes after 5 years and a new plan gets drawn up. areas like healthcare, education and housing which require long-term strategies shouldn’t have politicians let anywhere near them.

100% agree. But one would hope that if a progressing and successful short – midterm plan, growing into a long-term plan is in place then there is less likely it will be removed. Not having one helps nothing.

true for ya. only thing is that a free healthcare service is targeted as a ‘barrier to trade’ and successive governments are under pressure from the EU to privatise it.

“shouldn’t have politicians let anywhere near them”

So they should be run by an independent organization?

        Like the HSE?

        Oh.

Having experienced the wonderful A&E and Laurel ward in Blanch over the last two weeks, the biggest thing that I cannot get over is the lack of staff. The beds are there, the equipment is there, we dont run out of bandages or gloves, ambulances keep coming and going but all thats missing are health professionals. I do feel some sympathy for staff because they are so stretched but more humans may be the easiest solution….??

The problem with the HSE is the waste of money. Example I was part this week(won’t name my work place), box’s of plasters and open wound pads and what not were sent back to the stores. The ward had opened the box without opening the actual product. Because it would take the Supplies officer, not store man, but officer to much time to put it back on the system to be re used, I was called to bin all of it. Probably between €750-€1250 worth of stuffed dumped. And my facility is a small one. It’s waste like this that use the HSE budget.

Some people need to make the connection between the amount of resources they are wasting and who pays for these resources – which is the the dillhole doing all the waste – once the connection is realised, problem will resolve itself….you’d hope

It’s in bedded in the hse, I can’t blame anyone. People getting the jobs see the older staff wasting and the cycle continues. It’s also all these stupid titles people have. For instance store man is less money, holidays ext than a supplies office. They both do identical jobs. It’s just waste brought in by unions during the “good” times. In my time in the job I actually had to fill a large 40 foot skip with thousands of euros of in date unopened nappies because no one would bring them out of a closed ward over to a newly built ward. I gave up caring after reporting this and basically being told I’m paid from the neck down so i shouldn’t be worrying.

that’s absolutely disgraceful. i’d be very interested to hear what a TD would have to say about this level of wastage if your own supervisors don’t.

I think that type of stuff is well known though. As is the over-buying of stuff at the end of the year to use up what’s left in the budget to ensure the budget is not cut the following year.

          2. Anomanomanom

That’s what happens. The spend so they get the same budget each year. Instead of rewarding non wasting facilities by keeping their budget and and having an over flow budget for them out of the savings incase they need.

      1. Anomanomanom

Iv seen sackings but it would have to be very serious. Unfortunately being unfit for work, incapable of doing your job and basically being a waster will NOT get u sacked.

Try an 80 year old with a suspected stroke on a trolley in a corridor in St Vincent’s A&E for 82 hours from Monday 16th to Thursday 19th March? Things only got sorted when the Irish Times got wind of the carry on and the CEO was motivated to act and send an email. HSE is a broken, dysfunctional expensive mess.
