    Ha.

I’m guessing (and I can’t be bothered looking it up) is Pizza Express started in 1965 and came to Ireland as Milano in 1995…

1965 Must refer to Pizza Express which was founded in the UK in 1965. Pizza express expanded into Ireland in 1995 under the name Milano.

Apparently Pizza Express had to rename to Milano in Ireland because the first franchise that opened was no dawson st and it was felt that Pizza Express sounded too ‘fast food-y’ for that street so Milano was chosen (I also heard that DCC MADE them change the name due to the mansion house across the road).

No idea if thats true, anyone know?

I also heard this story. Which makes sense seen through the prism of DCC’s plumber-winning-the-lottery real fur no knickers gauche moneyed triumphalism c.1995.

+1 it was posh Dawson Street telling em to take a hike with their shitty moped imagery.

But Pizza Express is not a cheap brand like McDonald’s, for example.
No, it’s more likely it was due to the fact that Four Star Pizza owned the “pizza express” trademark in Ireland during the mid 90s.
Pizza Express plc subsequently acquired the trademark after also acquiring “Milan Pizza Express” and “Milanos.”

As far as I know it’s because in 1965 it was Pizza Express in the UK and then in 1995 it was Milano’s in Ireland. Anyone else heard anything similar?

I think somebody already had the name Pizza Express registered in Ireland so they launched here as Milano.

Look here – haggling over 30 years on a napkin is not going to solve the sudden massive hankering for a 9″ Romana 95 Margherita Bufala now IS IT?

It’s really not that great, no matter when it was founded, or what it’s called.
