In the mid-90s, before Sony designed the original Playstation they were developing a successor to the SNES with Nintendo.  Apparently  (see link below)  200 prototypes were built, but when the deal went sour, they were all destroyed – except for one (above) , which showed up in a dusty old box of bits recently. I’m still not entirely convinced this isn’t a fake, but if it’s not, it’s a really interesting piece of tech history.

If it is before they developed the PlayStation then why does it say “PlayStation” and “Sony” but not “Nintendo”?

Sony were working with Nintendo to made a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES, similar to the Sega CD was for the Megadrive. There’s even an access panel with a port underneath it on the bottom of the SNES where they would have plugged in.

The deal did indeed go sour and Sony did use the technology as the basis for the PlayStation, but I don’t think it even got to the physical prototype stage.

Here, that’s about the 3rd story today that’s well out of date. What’s going on BS!

Quick, someone get out and take some photos of swans on the canal. Or at least people blocking the cycle lane at the barge
