Go home lady.

Nothing to send here.

Anna McHugh of An Post writes:

Due to industrial action in mails processing centres by staff of supplier company IO Systems who are members of the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), An Post greatly regrets to advise customers NOT to post any mail items, with immediate effect, today Friday. Also, as a result of this industrial action, there will be no mail collections from businesses today, Friday.

Mail deliveries are operating as normal today (Friday). A small number of letters were not processed last night due to the industrial action between IO Systems and the CWU.

An Post greatly regrets this inconvenience to our customers and urges the parties involved to resolve their differences through the normal industrial relations procedures.

FIGHT!

Why the hell don’t An Post collect the letters anyway and bring them to the sorting office ?

    Can we elaborate on this statement as per IT website;

“Postal services nationwide will be brought to a halt from later today as a result of strike by staff who maintain sorting equipment An Post centres in Dublin, Cork, Portlaoise and Athlone.
The staff concerned are employed by contractor IO Systems.”

Its not even An Post staff. Its tech staff from an outsourced company who maintain the sorting equipment! So even if the equipment is currently working the postal workers have downed tools.

this is the equivalent of an office worker suddenly downing tools because the IT department has gone on strike even though their computer is still functioning.

fupping joke. Jobs for the boys. off to the boozer early on a friday, full pay wahay!

In this case I would have thought yes, if a contractor fails to deliver it is up to An Post to have a contingency plan in place as they are the service providers.
But then I thought of baggage handlers and their fondness of striking …. airlines can’t operate without them.
I guess it depends on the contract terms between An Post and IO Systems and their customer charter.

Even though the striking staff are not An Post employees, if An Post get other staff/contractors in to keep these machines running, then there own staff would likely strike in support, I guess.

    Solidarity?

      No, a sunny Friday afternoon.

It makes no logical sense for them not to collect the mail as usual.

Silliness. This isn’t the IT guy, it’s a separate company. If the agency cleaners in a hospital go on strike the consultants won’t grab mops and muck in.

And they know full well the impact on Irish businesses, time to put the maintenance tender out again…

Time for proper competition in postal services. You can’t send out a direct mail campaign in the post from Ireland unless it’s delivered by An Post and you can’t post into Ireland from overseas if you are an Irish based company. Can’t be legal under EU rules.

If anything this is exactly the type of carry on that would happen only worse if the tender for postal service was privatised. Here we have a subcontractor downing tools and for whatever reason (health and safety, contractual terms) the postal service grinds to a halt. I’m reminded of the headache in the UK when the rail lines, the service companies and the trains were owned by several different companies and a strike or problem at one shut down everything.
