Yeah, and the song the chant lifts from is Oops Upside Your Head by The Gap Band which was also a chart-topper. The Gap Band were a popular African-American beat combo from the 1970s and 1980s. I presume anyone buying that single was just as racist as the McGrath fans as the title contains an ‘Oo’. Come on, now.

I think you might be looking into this a bit much. The meaning which you affix to what you read/see/hear is has nothing to do with how others interpret it, and all to do with you.

I must be very innocent. That’s the first time I ever heard it suggested that the OOH AAH chant was because of Paul’s skin tone. I thought it was because it rhymes with McGrath. But then I haven’t been to any Premier League soccerball games. Was OOH AAH CANTONA racist too?

Billy, shouldn’t you be doing something infitisimally more useful like printing out preferred pronoun stickers rather then pretending that chant was in any way racist?

You haven’t been to a game in the like of say Croatia then…. if you think the Irish are bad (I don’t), you should go to a game in one of the old eastern block countries – Hajduk Split v Fulham was an eye opener for me a few years back

I was at the FAI cup final in 1988: Derry V Dundalk. Any fan of the Town that dared to utter monkey chants or racial epithets at the Derry player of Afro-Brazilian origin got a good going over from the rest of the supporters. Leave this canard to one side, please, Billy Joan :)

Quand les canards suivent un chalutier, c’est qu’elles pensent qu’on va leur jeter des sardines.

      Defo sure.
The woman who knitted these created a whole new squad for USA ’94, though still with Paul of course. I was across the water at the time and a lot of Villa fans snapped up the Paul McG ones as England did not qualify that year and most supported Ireland. I wish I still had the one of the ‘gaffer Staunton and Andy Townsend with the blonde highlights – amazing they were.
