Union of Students in Ireland members Daniel Waugh, Molly Kenny, Kevin Donoghue (USI President), Trish O’Beirne and Jack Leahy outside the Dáil earlier today
Fiona O’Malley, of the USI, writes:
“Today the Union of Students in Ireland launched their General Election Manifesto 2016 outside the Dáil, focusing on how young people will have a deciding impact on the next government, in areas like higher education funding, repealing the 8th amendment and accommodation. USI have registered 80,000 students to vote in the last two years.”

If the election is on a Friday a lot of students wont vote
Thursday is the student-vote-killing day.
As with referenda, you can legally register to vote in more than one constituency. You don’t have to remove your name from your home electoral roll if you register where you go to college. It’s only an offence to vote more than once.
vote early, vote often
Funny- they were the same three issues we fought for in the 80’s. Good ole democracy, always delivers.
In my day it was votes for women and no to subscription.
How hard we fought to have the Corn Laws Repealed…
*Proudly reveals Norman spear wound*
So Mister Tebbit likes to play rough eh?
@Bertie: and how! I draped myself over a wheelchair in a bid to get the juices flowing and The Tebbsinator blanked me.
No, Harvey.
Just say
“Remember.
We only have to be lucky once.”
That should do it.
@Hoop: Come to BS for all your Tory sexual deviancy needs.
@Bertie: you’re a bad, bad man.
This is one snort of laughter that will not be easy to explain.
Yikes!
Norman Tebbit.
You really know how to Brighton one’s day, Bertie.
Your Norman revelation is going down a bomb it seems.
…why don’t you get the candidates to sign pledges beforehand…like the Ruairi Quinn one last time…
@The Old Boy: there’s a peculiar substratum of commenters on this board, immersed in arch popular culture and the love of a good knob joke.
It’s why I come here Neilo. Let’s face it; most of the content is dreadful.
It’s not always primo gear, Old Boy, but the characters entertain me no end: when the board becomes an annex of Village magazine, we’ll no doubt have to seek our whimsy elsewhere.
@Bertie: stop, you are without pier, you son of a beach
Ah Neilo, I was much too far out all my life,
And not waving but drowning.
Your mans ginger hair just blew out the red LCD pixels on my screen, fook me
that’s what ed sheerin looks like when he shaves.
I kind of lost any respect for USI over their reaction to the increase in fees by about 300%.
The protest days were fun-days, let’s all go marching, forget about it after.
Mass-nonpayment never entered into it.
I remember the USI marching in Dublin on the same day as senior citizens. The latter were purposeful firebrands, the former weak-as-water hedonists.
That’s it.
Leadership too scared of scotching their future in Dail Eireann to actually represent real discontent.
They went with the option of being seen to be doing something, but not actually doing anything.
Saint Paul asks:
Aren’t all these people just FG trolls and shills in training?
@Saint Paul: they may yet enjoy their Damascene conversion.
The 80,000 figure seems a bit high, especially when USI themselves are saying they registered less than 28,000 for the marriage referendum.
