For the day that’s in it.

The tale of Margaret Kehoe, fatally injured on April 24th, 1916, while helping the wounded during that day’s rising effort.

Jane Lawrenson writes:

The video was produced by bigOmedia for the Ireland2016 team. It was directed by Kate Dolan and had an almost all female creative team working on it. It was made for International Women’s Day and for the launch of the 1916 Women’s programme.

Olga Wehry [1916] and Amy DeBhrún [2016] are the featuring actors. The video focuses on the differences and similarities between two women 100 years apart. It honours the women of 1916 while celebrating the women who are creating the Ireland of tomorrow.

There seems to be a lot of mixed messages about IWD. Could anyone tell me the actual purpose of it? Seems to be a marketing yarn for a lot of companies.

    1. Liam

It was an early 20th century initiative from socialists to demonstrate how ‘if a man was a slave to a boss, a woman was a slave to that slave.’

    2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

I didn’t think this was marketing anything, just a timely video no?

      1. Tony

I was making no comment on the video. I just don’t see any fluency in the day. Maybe anything that includes women or female is enough. Not sure I get the point if its whatever you’re having yourself.

        1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

There’s a whole website about IWWD if you are interested, it will tell you all you need to know.

          I liked the video.

          1. Tony

Disappointing. All over the shop. Lots of corporates getting PR out of it. A waste of all the attention. #pledgeforparity is so weak. Even EY have signed up for it :-). Nothing to see here, as you were.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

It doesn’t get “all the attention”. For most people, it’s one article in a MSM paper about the pay gap. That’s about it, oh and maybe something mentioned on a radio show. And a lame FB post about women being all beautiful and wonderful fairy people.

Yes, it is “all over the shop” because there isn’t just one cause of gender disparity, it starts from encouraging girls, all the way through to addressing disparity in pay/participation etc now. It may seem weak now but they are going to introduce legislation in the UK around transparency on pay by gender. That will be interesting to see (if it gets through, and hopefully it does).

You write off a campaign based on one partner? Lame.

          3. Tony

Yes Don. I write off campaigns when I see they are aimed at getting corporate support rather than the cause they mean to achieve. It seems to be all guff, Facebook posts and lame weak statements from mostly male masters.
The women in my life have actual issues such as confidence, pay gaps, stress, child minding costs and the everyday struggles of women everywhere. IWD seems to be telling them to be better workers and lean in and look at these great men and women you can’t relate to. Its just a very strange bunch of messages. And as for the video, haven’t a clue… Again, they could have used the attention to make a point that relates somehow to the real world of women.

          4. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

And who do you think pays women and can help progress them through from junior ranks to senior management if not the companies themselves (who also donate money to things like this)?

“The women in my life have actual issues such as confidence, pay gaps, stress, child minding costs and the everyday struggles of women everywhere.” You know the parity thing includes the pay gap right? And parity of childcare and parity of negotiating your wage.

And yet here you are, a male master as you put it, shutting the whole thing down when it’s clear you don’t know anything about it!

          5. Tony

Total rubbish Don. As if corporates will give better childcare. Are you actually kidding? And corporates give equal pay? Surely you jest? And corporates deal with sickness and maternity in a decent way? You have truly drunk the sauce. Why would you let the most rapacious entities on Earth represent your fellow women when you know they couldn’t give a damn. If they did, things would have changed by now.

The interweb is full of “brave, inspiring, trailblazing” women that in no way relate to ordinary women or their issues. Seems like a crock of bull to me that corporates use to hide their guilt, but theres enough fear out there that no-one will call their BS.

It seems you dont mind being patronised and I’m surprised at you. Do you work for a corporate or something?

          6. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Tell me more about how I am womaning wrong Tony, I love it

          7. Nigel

Oh my God, are opportunistic corporations muscling in on Women’s day? That’s it. all over. You know a thing is all over when opportunistic corporations start making noises.

          8. Caroline

I bet they’re even competing for highly-qualified female employees with a range of incentives that some would call pandering, and others would call shameless pandering.

          9. Tony

Male master? Womaning? I am making this about IWD and the people behind it. You are making it about me being a man. Why do you have to be so misandrist? is it just habit?

          10. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

That you think corporations are “behind it” is lol

          11. Tony

I see you ignore all the other points and just focus on the misandry. A bit weak for “the force”? No?

          12. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

That’s because you don’t know what you are talking about and I got bored frankly

          13. Tony

Very weak responses. Go along like a good sheep and celebrate how you’re told. If you are the unstoppable force, women should worry… You’ll be standing up for yourself and your male boss.

          14. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

I have enjoyed your mansplaining Tony. Maybe we can do it again sometime.

          15. Nigel

Tony was totally into women before they were cool, but then they sold out and went mainstream.

          16. Tony

Nigel get out from her skirt. Speak your own mind like a man. And Don, explain to Nigel what a wuss is please.

      1. Caroline

Exactly like Christmas. Except it’s all about women. So it’s a very difficult day for people who have no women in their lives. Let’s try to be sensitive for their sake.

          1. Caroline

You tried and that’s all that matters.

Now, let’s celebrate international women’s day or whatever with a nice refreshing mooncup of Prosecco. Cheers!

Margaret Kehoe was a nurse and lived in rooms in South Dublin Union.
She was listed as a registered voter there in 1908, as women could vote in local elections.
She was also listed there in in the 1911 census.
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000172420/

She was the nurse in charge that day. There was a gunfire exchange between Dan McCarty and British Soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment. She cam down a stairs to tend to wounded and she herself was shot, in the discharge of her duties.

    1. Tony

Fair play to her and all like her… And now BP, Accenture and EY ride on her coat tails. A bit like Joe Duffy and the childer…

      1. DubLoony

There’s more news to come out soon on Nurse Kehoe, a local history group has been wading through archives trying to find her.

  3. joe

despite not there not being a single female signatory to the proclamation, nor was there a single woman in any leadership role in the rising, we are now told by official Ireland that women had a ‘central role’ in 1916. revisionism how are ya

        1. Nigel

Women literally took the day off and nothing happened to women and women did absolutely nothing the whole time it was on.

          1. Nigel

That’s JUST what I was saying about you and your take on efforts to highlight women’s roles and experiences in 1916 except I said go back to your bananas they’re good for you.

        2. ReproBertie

Only 77 women were arrested because Pearse and Co told Cumann na mBan to leave when the cause was lost. Many of the 77 that were arrested were the ones that refused to give up and go. On top of that Cumann na Mban served as couriers between strongholds so were less likely to be trapped within when the leaders surrendered.

    1. DubLoony

Constance Markievicz, Cumman nMBan were there.
Revisionism happened early when they were written out of the rebellion story and confined to the home in the constitution, out of juries and out of work with the marriage bar.

The Bureau of Military Archives statements puts them well and truly back in the picture.
Its about telling the forgotten history, not just the chest thumping nationalist version mythologizing that passed for it.

      1. joe

a very small minority of participants. it is an even greater error to pretend that 1916 was some kind of egalitarian revolution when it quite obviously wasn’t.

  4. Looking In

Jeepers it’s so depressing, cold and sad. Should have showed her helping people, showing her strength and empathy not brushing her hair and looking out the bloody window! You wouldn’t think a group of women made this at all.

    1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Being a woman is depressing, cold and sad….. until a man comes along!

Seriously, I thought it was a lovely simple treatment of how at the beginning of your day, while you wash your face and prepare yourself for the day, that you never know what impact you are going to have on the world and on others, whether you are a nurse in 1916 or a lady doctor in 2016.

        1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

“The video was produced by bigOmedia for the Ireland2016 team. It was directed by Kate Dolan and had an almost all female creative team working on it. It was made for International Women’s Day and for the launch of the 1916 Women’s programme.”

          1. Tony

Id say it helped with the funding. That would be the only link I can see to women day. Box ticking poo.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Just one more harsh word from him Caroline, and I for one am ready to tear it all down. What were we even thinking displeasing Tony like this?

          3. Tony

Suppliant middle class women. Feminists while its fashionable, but no fear of actually doing anything that might upset your male sponsors. They dont need your support, women do. Hell has a special place for you as Madleine said.

          4. ReproBertie

Girls, girls, girls. You’re misjudging poor Tony. Since he heard about IWD he’s been counting down the days and dreaming of the wonderful things that would happen today – an end to FGM, the pay gap, religious based oppression and street harrassment as a start. Then the day dawned and realisation hit and disappointment soon turned to bitterness and cynicism. The masked gunman forcing him to read pithy quotes on FB and watch corporate videos doesn’t help.

Hang in there Tony. Maybe redouble your efforts campaigning for women’s rights and see what next year’s IWD brings.

  5. Rainy Day

“had an almost all female creative team working on it”…why is this overtly sexist fact celebrated as if it is a good thing??

  6. Tony

Funny how all year this is an unshakeable bastion of feminism. But on actual IWD, it takes the lamest, most middle class, corporate approach ever. Is repeal the 8th back on tomorrow so? Fair weather feminists are a dangerous lot, just like my mother told me.

    1. Nigel

Attacking other people for not feministing hard enough makes you a better feminist than everybody.

      1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Tony has more feminist in his little toe than all of BS put together
