The video was produced by bigOmedia for the Ireland2016 team. It was directed by Kate Dolan and had an almost all female creative team working on it. It was made for International Women’s Day and for the launch of the 1916 Women’s programme.
Olga Wehry [1916] and Amy DeBhrún [2016] are the featuring actors. The video focuses on the differences and similarities between two women 100 years apart. It honours the women of 1916 while celebrating the women who are creating the Ireland of tomorrow.

There seems to be a lot of mixed messages about IWD. Could anyone tell me the actual purpose of it? Seems to be a marketing yarn for a lot of companies.
It’s just a day on which you have to respect women is all.
It was an early 20th century initiative from socialists to demonstrate how ‘if a man was a slave to a boss, a woman was a slave to that slave.’
I didn’t think this was marketing anything, just a timely video no?
I was making no comment on the video. I just don’t see any fluency in the day. Maybe anything that includes women or female is enough. Not sure I get the point if its whatever you’re having yourself.

Disappointing. All over the shop. Lots of corporates getting PR out of it. A waste of all the attention. #pledgeforparity is so weak. Even EY have signed up for it :-). Nothing to see here, as you were.
It doesn’t get “all the attention”. For most people, it’s one article in a MSM paper about the pay gap. That’s about it, oh and maybe something mentioned on a radio show. And a lame FB post about women being all beautiful and wonderful fairy people.
Yes, it is “all over the shop” because there isn’t just one cause of gender disparity, it starts from encouraging girls, all the way through to addressing disparity in pay/participation etc now. It may seem weak now but they are going to introduce legislation in the UK around transparency on pay by gender. That will be interesting to see (if it gets through, and hopefully it does).

Yes Don. I write off campaigns when I see they are aimed at getting corporate support rather than the cause they mean to achieve. It seems to be all guff, Facebook posts and lame weak statements from mostly male masters.
The women in my life have actual issues such as confidence, pay gaps, stress, child minding costs and the everyday struggles of women everywhere. IWD seems to be telling them to be better workers and lean in and look at these great men and women you can’t relate to. Its just a very strange bunch of messages. And as for the video, haven’t a clue… Again, they could have used the attention to make a point that relates somehow to the real world of women.

And who do you think pays women and can help progress them through from junior ranks to senior management if not the companies themselves (who also donate money to things like this)?

The interweb is full of “brave, inspiring, trailblazing” women that in no way relate to ordinary women or their issues. Seems like a crock of bull to me that corporates use to hide their guilt, but theres enough fear out there that no-one will call their BS.

Margaret Kehoe was a nurse and lived in rooms in South Dublin Union.
She was listed as a registered voter there in 1908, as women could vote in local elections.
She was also listed there in in the 1911 census.

She was the nurse in charge that day. There was a gunfire exchange between Dan McCarty and British Soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment. She cam down a stairs to tend to wounded and she herself was shot, in the discharge of her duties.
Fair play to her and all like her… And now BP, Accenture and EY ride on her coat tails. A bit like Joe Duffy and the childer…

Better she had remained obscure than that Tony be reminded corporations exist.

3326 men were arrested. 77 women. That’s about 2%

Only 77 women were arrested because Pearse and Co told Cumann na mBan to leave when the cause was lost. Many of the 77 that were arrested were the ones that refused to give up and go. On top of that Cumann na Mban served as couriers between strongholds so were less likely to be trapped within when the leaders surrendered.
Constance Markievicz, Cumman nMBan were there.
Revisionism happened early when they were written out of the rebellion story and confined to the home in the constitution, out of juries and out of work with the marriage bar.
The Bureau of Military Archives statements puts them well and truly back in the picture.
Its about telling the forgotten history, not just the chest thumping nationalist version mythologizing that passed for it.

Seriously, I thought it was a lovely simple treatment of how at the beginning of your day, while you wash your face and prepare yourself for the day, that you never know what impact you are going to have on the world and on others, whether you are a nurse in 1916 or a lady doctor in 2016.

Girls, girls, girls. You’re misjudging poor Tony. Since he heard about IWD he’s been counting down the days and dreaming of the wonderful things that would happen today – an end to FGM, the pay gap, religious based oppression and street harrassment as a start. Then the day dawned and realisation hit and disappointment soon turned to bitterness and cynicism. The masked gunman forcing him to read pithy quotes on FB and watch corporate videos doesn’t help.
Hang in there Tony. Maybe redouble your efforts campaigning for women’s rights and see what next year’s IWD brings.
