Not sure if you mean the pootpost that Broadsheet put up of the mark of solidarity that people are making on FB. I was only yesterday talking to my work colleagues how awful I thought the attacks were and how I was thinking about the the poor people in Belgium, but in fairness I didn’t realise that we couldn’t express disgust at the attacks any more. Thanks BS for pointing out other people’s flaws.

  1. MoyestWithExcitement

Bit mean spirited, this. Is taking the pish out of these people helping the situation?

    1. Panty Christ

Roddy Doyle was quick off the mark this week to make a tit of himself in that regard

      1. han solo's carbonite dream

i’ve always hated roddy doyle two lads in a pub.
        he is sh1te.

well maybe not sh1te just boring as f

    2. Nice Jung Man

it helps people feel superior to mock those of simple faiths and beliefs

you know – like calling people with whom you don’t agree ‘idiots’ on the internet

        1. Nice Jung Man

How astute of you – to repurpose the thread to highlight – yet again your own shortcomings.
Have you consulted mental health services as a matter of interest?

As many other posters have pointed out there’s a few of you here e.g Anne, Same old same old, ahjaysiz, don pidgeon woman – and all of you ever seem to do is ventilate your clearly damaged personalities online

constantly in a rage, foam-flecked, ranting, attacking and belittling others

you are all destroying the site in pursuing your hate-filled agendae

          1. Same Old Same Old

“As many other posters have pointed out”

We think we’re spot on there again.. xx Well said again us.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

“have a good rant at me now for pointing out the obvious – why don’t you?”

Who me? Nah, got better things to do thanks. But go on without me.

          3. Nice Jung Man

don, you gotta admit you have some major anger issues judging from the tone and content of your frequent diatribes on this

a few weeks ago you attacked that women catherine mcentee because she was saying some stuff about the dangers of abortions

you just could have pointed out where in your view etc her perspective was not supported by the facts and gave a few references etc

but still this simple approach was somehow beyond you as you were incandescent with rage

first step is acceptance of the problem

          4. Nice Jung Man

you could all just accept your manifest anger issues

that would be the first step

after that I don’t really care

you’re just some losers ranting on the internet

          5. Nice Jung Man

and the fact is you’re destroying this site for everyone else

no-one else is rushing to your rescue I notice

          6. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

I’m single-handedly destroying all of BS? Wow, what power I have! I hope I only use it for good!

          7. Same Old Same Old

Sybil, we’re gone a bit whiny.. Let’s give it a rest for a while will we?

Happy thoughts Sybil… let’s go to the happy place. xx

          8. Anne

“you could all just accept your manifest anger issues

that would be the first step
after that I don’t really care”

Whats the second step though ?

          9. Same old same old

Nice Jung Man has a point though hasn’t he Anne? Actively posting under another posters handle is pretty freaky and out there in fairness

          10. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

And I don’t feel I need to be rescued from the likes of you to be honest, over-running the comments with this nonsense.

Now chill out, there’s a long weekend on the way, there may even be sun, and we won’t have to talk to each other for 4 whole days. Amazing!

          11. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

” Actively posting under another posters handle is pretty freaky and out there in fairness”

That is pretty odd but then I think having multiple logins is weird. Maybe people are just weird.

          12. Mikeyfex

Ah stop will you? The amount of noise on the website lately is so off putting. From picky, tedious arguments to unfunny, tedious trolls. It’s no wonder so many people have stopped commenting.

          13. Anne

            “Ah stop will you?”

It’s kinda like one of those email storms – reply to all, saying stop.. it never works.. Just sayin’ :)

          14. Nice Jung Man

            Hi folks

I have only one login on here

I don’t know what the issue with Anne is

Rather than face her obvious anger issues she is logging in as others?

            That’s it is it?

My point was addressed to Same old same old just the same as the other anger trolls.

Like Mikey, I’m really sick of logging in here every day and seeing the same old (pun intended) savage beasts tearing strips off each other and attacking and belittling others, it’s very limiting.

I’m sorry for stating the obvious but please reflect on it, and have a safe weekend everyone

          15. Catherine McEntee

Well said Nice Jung Man. It’s about time someone addressed the toxic bullies on here that seem to think they can attack anyone that’s not brown-nosing them or in their caustic coven.

I have found the original, Same Old Same Old, to be a decent person and an interesting poster. The person now posting as him, is
showing herself to be a bitter old crone who is to be pitied. If she put as much time and energy into educating herself on current affairs, as opposed to filling her posts with
copied and pasted articles followed by rambling litanies, we’d all be better off.

She posted as me a few times too, got no
            response, then transferred her juvenile
arseholery to trolling as others on here.

        2. Same old same old

          Thanks Nice Jung Man
I had no issue with you pulling the piss out of me to be honest

    3. Anne

“Is taking the pish out of these people helping the situation?”

Who knows. Rotsey will be along any minute to tell us the intention here..

  2. Polaroid Fluid

better that than “yeah but what about the poor people in whatever-istan, typical western blah blah blah”. Shut up. Next you’ll be giving these dirty rats blowies.

  3. 15 cents

people arent trying to help by puttin a flag on their profile, theyre just showing support.

    1. Royal M

How does it support the fight against religious extremism? It doesn’t. It just makes the person posting it feel better about themselves.

      1. Nigel

I’m so glad there’s someone here to finally stand up against people feeling better about themselves.

  4. Verbatim

Got to admit that it’ll take more than the platitudes that are on FB to get us out of the hole we are in.

  5. Smashmouth

best post on Broadsheet in ages

On a side note – its funny how theres far less people changing their profile pics on facebook to the Belgian flag as there were to the French flag

    1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

I think Paris was more shocking, not to down play Brussels, but you would expect transport to be targeted, not a concert maybe? That and young kids out having fun.

      1. Verbatim

I think people are weary, lighting up monuments, changing profile pics, outrage is not going to solve this.

        1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Is anyone claiming that it will or is it simply a small show of support and a small fupp you to IS who want to divide us from people who feel they can’t really do anything else?

          1. Verbatim

Yeah, that’s very nice showing support by taking 5ms to change your profile. It’s a desperate situation really, who knows where the next bomb will go off and we are told there will be a next and a next… the mood is sombre and people are dividing, which could lead to a lot of violence.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

It takes your 5 mins to change yours?! :)

Seriously, I think it is nice, I think people in Paris and Brussels appreciate it. Equally important are the chats about not letting such events divide us because that is what IS wants. They want us to be afraid to go out, they want us to be afraid of Muslims, they want to start a war between the West and Muslims. Why let them win?

          3. jungleman

People changing their profile picture over a terrorist attack are doing it primarily out of narcissism. It is the very foundation upon which a social network thrives. Same applies to people checking in as “safe” after a terrorist attack. The whole world revolves around them.

          4. mildred st. meadowlark

I agree with the profile pic thing, it does seem to be more narcissistic than to have any real value (but then who am I to quantify the value of such a gesture?) but the checking in as safe does seem to me to be a good idea, because if you have a relative or friend who was in Brussels, your thoughts would go to them, hoping they are safe. It seems, to me, one of the few benefits of social media in such an horrific situation.

          5. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Some might be but I don’t think it’s as many people as thought. People today live their lives online so it must only be natural to express your emotion or opinion in that way.

I would think checking in safe after an attack is a quick and easy way of letting people know you are ok no? I know when these things happen I always wonder if I know anyone over there and if they are ok.

And, in the end, does it really matter if someone changes their FB profile?

          6. MoyestWithExcitement

Whatever their motivation, their message is a positive one. Why belittle them for that other than to make yourself feel superior? They are releasing a positive into the air, you are releasing a negative.

          7. jungleman

I’m not being negative.. Just making an observation. People are entirely within their right to do it. But just because it is a positive thing on the face of it does not mean we shouldn’t question peoples’ motives. Personally, I think their time would be better spent reading up on the Middle East, rather than blindly clicking a button which really doesn’t require much thought at all. It is through better education and understanding that the big issues of the world will be solved, not through Facebook profile pictures.

          8. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Also, didn’t FB just add a post to your timeline making it super easy for people to change it? Another reason why it may be less narcissism and more of a show of support – and why not as many people have done it for Brussels.

          9. MoyestWithExcitement

            ”I’m not being negative”

Well, you are. You are criticising them. If that wasn’t clear in your previous post with your narcissism comment, it’s clear in this one with your comment about how they should be spending their time. Like I said, what you’re posting here only serves to make you feel superior. Their motivation might be selfish as well, but at least a nice message is the byproduct of it. The opposite is the case with you.

”But just because it is a positive thing on the face of it does not mean we shouldn’t question peoples’ motives.”

Why? What purpose does it serve? Remember now, you are lamenting what these Facebook photos because they just serve an ego and have no effect on the real world, so, again, why should we, on the internet, question their motives?

”Personally, I think their time would be better spent reading up on the Middle East”

Ok. So Owen from Bray has decided not to change his Facebook photo and read a report about the rise of Wahhabisim. Now what? How are the people of Brussels lives any different now?

”It is through better education and understanding that the big issues of the world will be solved, not through Facebook profile pictures.”

Or through condescending missives on the comments section of a relatively obscure blog that nobody your message is aimed at is reading.

          10. jeremy kyle

Whatever about the profile picture, it’s not fair to imply people are checking in as safe out of narcissism.

          11. Janet, I ate my avatar

I didn’t mark myself safe a friend did and lots of people who tried to call were happy to see it. Its hard to explain how helpless you feel when it’s on your doorstep and it’s a show of solidarity in the face of being pretty helpless for the most part to do anything else but to change your profile. A sense of community helps to deal with events.

        2. Same old same old

Jungleman seems a bit angry over perceived slights
The other day he was whining about how some people earn more than him
          Get over yourself

      1. Nice Jung Man

this guy is a pro-israeli shill

he only ever posts about anti-islamic or pro-israeli stuff

        1. jungleman

          Smashmouth?

I do recall him being pro Israel alrite. Don’t see why he can’t be correct about something else though which is completely unrelated.

          1. Smashmouth

            Pro Israel?!

I would consider myself quite the opposite

Think you have me confused with someone else. But if you want to find evidence to the contrary by all means go ahead

          2. jungleman

Yes I must be confusing you with someone else.. Did they mean I am a pro Israel shill? Because I have a track record of the complete opposite here also!

          3. Smashmouth

I think its more a case of Broadsheet users having to fulfil their obligation of identifying X amount of Israeli Shills per week

          4. Nice Jung Man

            Hi smartasssmash

I’m not one of the clowns here with nothing better to do that go off doing google searches looking for ‘evidence’ of some asshat ranting off on the internet

But yes your posts have led me to believe that you’re a strong Israeli supporter.

Sorry if I got it wrong – I’d hate to misunderstand you.

  6. Tish Mahorey

We’re already living through World War III. Get used to it. It’ll be going on for another 50 years.

Ireland will be in NATO within the lifetime of the next Government and your children will be fighting wars in Middle East and Asia.
