Coalition Of The Unwilling

This afternoon.

Government buildings, Dublin

Acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny (top) and Fianna Fáil Leader Michaél Martin (above) slowly head for talks.

Mr Martin told reporters:

“Just before lunchtime I rang the Taoiseach and we agreed that we would engage in the aftermath of that (Wednesday’s vote for taoiseach). I told him we were in negotiations with independents, just as he is, and when that process had concluded, we’d engage after that.

“We didn’t get into that detail [about whether Fianna Fail would support a Fine Gael minority] I know people are anxious to know when a government is going to be formed and all of that, but I think we’re some weeks away from that yet.”

FIGHT!

He reminds me of the ‘Crucifixion’s a doddle’ prisoner who secretly loves the Romans in Life of Brian.

The usual noisy protesters are strangely silent, all going according to plan.

SF & co want to force FF/FG coalition. This would leave SF as main opposition party.
FF don’t want to be the smaller coalition party for obvious reasons, but they are also blocking SF.
No-one wants SF in government, including SF.

Meanwhile independents seem to be splitting, Greens have walked away and AAA/PBP/TLAs sit on their hands.

We’ll probably end up with a FG minority government (FF won’t want to be dealing with the Luas, DART, Dublin Bus, teachers and anyone else who believes they’re worth it, strikes) but it won’t see out the year. That’s if they don’t just have a very public strop and we head into a new election with Enda and Joan removed as party leaders.

Abut bloody time. I have the matching shoes, bag and hat bought weeks ago. Now for the dress. I don’t want to upstage the grooms or anything…. much.

Seriously. Imagine trying to explain to a foreigner why two parties with very similar ideologies therefore no real political differences are refusing to even speak let alone anything else. Even worst, imagine then trying to explain why some sections of the electorate think this is acceptable behaviour.

Why do foreigners give a toss about our current political sitcom? Should they not just feck off up to the Guinness Storehouse and hop on the Viking splash tours like their mates?

        1. ReproBertie

Not really. Sure we’re just of a number of EU countries currently in flux . Any concerned foreigners can rest assured it’ll all be sorted out soon enough and hurry along to Temple Bar for a fleecing.

they should fight for the taoseach job.. hands wrapped in gauze, dipped in glue and glass .. RTE to air it. with Claire Byrne doing sassy hosting for it.

  4. ForFecksSake

They don’t want to talk about forming a government together. They want to talk about the other party backing a BS minority coalition.

That is the best alternative for SF surely? Mary Lou can legitimately snipe at both the Government and the opposition at the one time.

I really pity her partner at the wrong time of the month btw. Serious anger issues.

  5. Truth in the News

We neither need or want Martin or Kenny as the next Taoiseach, and the Independents and SF can decide the issue, since FF and FG know once they consumate the wedding they are f–ked…and if they go to the country again
they will be wiped out, what exactly have they being up to for the last month..
