London striding forward with election of first muslim mayor, while we stagger backwards with a government of maddening banality.

        1. Frilly Keane

          Ah sur I know

When he performed the opening of the Flower Shop there by St Paul Patrick’s… T’was hard to deny

But when he doesn’t tell Miriam Marian it doesn’t count really

        1. jonotti

That is a ridiculous and offensive argument. Youre willing to completely discard everything unique about him as a politician and just focus on his religious background.

          1. Spagnolia von Hoop

            +1 , exactly.
Just as bad as applauding when female politicians get elected to office.

          2. Nigel

I imagine it’ll be no longer singled out as a thing to celebrate around the same time it is no longer singled out as a thing that is inherently negative by opponents. I also imagine that it’s ridiculous and insulting to assume that people who are pointing out what a cool thing it is that a muslim got elected are discarding everything else about him, since people can generally hold conceptions of individuals that encompass more than one attribute at a time with ease.

          3. Brother Barnabas

When did I discard everything unique about him as a politician?

If you find my comment to be offensive, that says more about you than anything else.

My point is about a city of London’s importance – culturally, economically, symbolically and everything else – demonstrating maturity and intelligence etc in choosing the individual it reckons will do the best job as mayor despite him being muslim at a time of heightened Islamophobia (and despite the best efforts of some nasty fascists). I admire that. And at a time when there’s a danger that Europe might be slipping back and losing touch with its own ideals, Khan’s election is a tremendous stride forward.

          4. Brother Barnabas

(And it’s depressing that it comes on the same weekend that we get yet another self-serving government that has zero interest in bringing this country to a better place)

          5. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Also important to note he was a human rights lawyer whereas Boris bought illegal water cannons. I think people liked that he had a real job at some point. The fact he grew up in council housing was another point people liked. He was much more normal than ZAc. So while being Muslim was maybe part of it fit some people, so were other parts of him for other people.

      1. Malta

It shouldn’t be but it is. It would be inconceivable for New York, or other large American city to elect a Muslim mayor. (I know it’s not really a fair comparison, but it’s still worth considering).

        1. Spagnolia von Hoop

That’s an odd comment. New York is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world and has elected mayors of various nationalities. Why would religion come into it? Who cares if the mayor is muslim, christian, jewish?

          1. Nigel

This is a questioned best answered through contemplation of the various ways in which opposition to the newly elected was expressed.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

If he was any other religion then maybe it wouldn’t be important. But with the campaign run the way it was and the fact this is actually a great counter argument to extremism, it is very important. Not the reason he was elected but important none the less.

          3. Spagnolia von Hoop

            It’s a statement of attitudes – it’s certainly not a stride forward.

          4. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

A statement of attitudes can’t be also a stride forward? Because it is in the situation.

          5. Nigel

Of course it is. It’s a step towards normalising the election of people from non-Christian religions to public office, a step towards making it as unremarkable as you seem to want it to be, though how you think we’re supposed to get to that point without it actually happening and taking note of it happening and treating it as a positive development is beyond me.

          6. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Quite. Maybe ask the Tories, it seemed important to them. Everyone else is worried about housing and things that matter.

          7. Nigel

We all dream of the happy day when this is the standard rational response to this sort of thing, and not a weird admission to compete ignorance to everything that is going on in the world right now, let alone London.

          8. Spagnolia von Hoop

@Nigel We may be barking up the same tree but I think you are supporting tokenism. If you are championing a Mayor / elected representative of Muslim faith then how should his non-Muslim constituents feel about that? If I work in a multi-cultural and multi-racial office- I would be damning that diversity by highlighting it, surely?

          9. Malta

New York may be multi-cultural but it has elected one non-white mayor, and has never elected a female mayor.

The presumptive Republican nominee for president in America proposed forbidding Muslims entering the USA and you think a Muslim candidate could be elected mayor?

          10. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

@hoop but he didn’t campaign as a Muslim mayor. His whole campaign was not about representing just one part of London. I’m not Muslim and voted for him and I feel fine about that.

Highlighting diversity is damning it? I’m not sure what straw you are trying to grasp at tbh. Tokenism would be ejecting him simply because he is Muslim which, for the second time, did not happen. There aren’t enough Muslims in London to have been the only people to vote him in.

      2. Frilly Keane

        He was a good candidate
And that was enough ta’bate the London Glamour Boy Goldsmith

        That’s the story

  2. Vanessa

Leo ‘shafted’ by kenny isnt painful. In actual fact leo has appeared to be disinterested and away with the fairies when in health. Bet he delighted he shafted.

    1. Twunt

I don’t think anyone wants to be minister for health. The health service would appear to be ungovernable, and it’s primary function would appear to be the enrichment those calling the shots.

      1. Broadsheet Spawned A Monster

It could mean that they will be able to put a better spin on it. Maybe Mauritania now rather than Angola

    2. Frilly Keane

Leo had no more interest in that job than Mr Blobby
As long as it’s a Ministerial gig he’s content
It’s not like he does a full week’s work anyway

      He’s a Politician
      Not a Minister

He’s not camera shy but he’s definitely work shy

          1. Frilly Keane

I think she’s leaning over my posts with the clipboard and doing the tally boxes

          1. Steph Pinker

Frilly, you are really abusing your position and your opportunity to air your opinion {and sadly, personal grievances) here on BS. You made a specific reference to Anne in your post yesterday, and now you’re wondering why she’s trying to save face by trolling you, in the same manner you trolled her? You’re a hypocrite and you’re passive aggressive, and you try to circle the wagons against anyone who disagrees with your divisive, ill-informed, badly written, childish opinion pieces – you need to grow up, and BS has to stop giving you attention because you’ve proven that you have no particular talent, except for getting clicks on your silly rants. And, as for Anne, you suit each other very well – you’re more alike than either of you will ever admit, which is to the annoyance of those of us who have to read your incessant and narcissistic tripe.

          2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

+1 Steph. Those two need their heads banging together.

          3. Kieran NYC

            + many, Steph

Also LOVE Broadsheet giving people the opportunity to publicly bully people in their own ‘articles’.

            Who’s next on the list?

          4. Anne

I wasn’t going to say anything to ye pack of windbags, but fupp it….

Steph Pinker, mind your own business, thanks.
I’ve no need to save face.. This isn’t the real world ya know.

Kieran NYC, the admins aren’t facilitating any bullying, I don’t think. They probably didn’t read as far down as where my name was mentioned and even if someone did, in fairness you’d be forgiven for thinking she was having a bit of crack… she was waiting to pounce though…she’s a bit bitter like that.

It’s to be expected every now and then from your wan who doesn’t do the ‘amplified’ indignation at all at all.
Who was the last one who she got stuck into, Alfred E Nueman or something or other? A man who could write well and was from another class than Frilly, which she couldn’t seem to stand.

She got particularly vicious a few times with Anne-Marie McNally and I told her as much. She was ‘úçking beside herself’ she said at Anne-Marie on the post about Anglo Austria and the Panama Papers – your wan who doesn’t do the ‘amplified indignation’..

No credit given to Anne-Marie whatsoever for trying to explain to explain the almost impenetrable banking wheelings and dealings.. instead she got on the bangwagon and was ‘beside herself’, along with the capitalist rentboys who try to negate any impropriety by correcting the financial jargon being used. Ucking beside herself.. coz like she inhabits the financial world. lol

I don’t carry grudges myself but keep getting stuck into people like Anne-Marie McNally and you’ll be called up on it and the p*ss will be taken.. It’s just tough fupping titty if you don’t like it. Nothing personal.. night now.

          5. Anne

One other thing.. Anyone trying to explain the complex shenanigans of what went on with Anglo or Nationwide / IRBC or NAMA or any of the almost impenetrable financial dealings that are certaintly not benefiting you nor I should be given some credit.

There’s the same few commenters around here saying ‘nothing to see here’.. it’s horsesh**

The fupp sh**es involved in it are banking on us not understanding it or discussing it.. that’s why I think anyone trying to explain some of it should be given some credit, not strips torn out of them for having the temerity to try to demystify some of it, so they won’t talk about it again.

I went out to listen to Anne-Marie McNally and Catherine Murphy out in the Lucan Spa hotel and the reams of redacted paper they get back from FOI requests are a joke.

You’re uckin beside yourself at the wrong people..

          6. Anne

            “Who’s next on the list?”

I nominate you.. .Do you wear skinny pants? Frilly has a thing for skinny pants it seems. :) Her ass don’t fit into um probably.

          7. Never Say Never Again

@ Limerick Tin&er and Stephanie No Powers

Frilly’s ‘attack’ on Anne was entirely expected given the latter’s frankly psychotic fixation with belittling the former and anyone with whom she doesn’t agree at every opportunity. Note even the reference to windbags in the above comment.

As for the ugly spectre of getting aggressive posters banned after incontrovertibly displaying consistently brutal, nasty, derogatory and insulting behaviour herself, broadsheet mods and Anne should hold their heads in shame

          8. Anne

Eh… how long are you around here, Sybil?

I’ve no fixation with anyone… In fact I nominated Frilly on some post on International Woman’s day there about a month ago.. So you’re wrong. Again.
Also didn’t join in in criticising her columns since. Butt your nose out and stop trying to instigate..

There’s a big difference in calling no one in particular windbags and saying directly to a female commenter ‘shut your mouth b*tch’.. as you did the other day. That’s probably why they keep banning you. Others are saying it’s not ok too.. it ain’t just me… In fact Steph P make a remark about it.. You can’t behave yourself.

  3. Peter Dempsey

Gives out about Ireland being “ruled” by the Catholic church.

    Welcomes London’s first Muslim mayor.

    1. Brother Barnabas

And the minute he tries to introduce Sharia law to London, he’ll have outstayed his welcome.

Doubt it will happen, though, do you?

      1. Peter Dempsey

My comment was directed towards your typical SJW that’s found on Rabble and Broadsheet.

Forever rabbiting on about the evil Catholic church controlling women’s bodies etc.

But remains strangely silent on Islam’s negative aspects.

        1. Nigel

The negative aspects of Islam being such huge factors in Irish society and all.

          1. Peter Dempsey

“I am voting for Sadiq Khan because having a Muslim mayor will send a positive message to the world” is just as bad as “I am not voting for Sadiq Khan because having a Muslim mayor will be negative for London”

          2. Brother Barnabas

            That’s not the point, Peter.

What’s heartening about this is that voters saw through the anti-Muslim scaremongering (and there was heaps and heaps of it going on) and refused to be swayed by the Islamophobia sweeping Europe (and the UK) when casting their vote. That was a beautiful thing.

          3. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

And as someone living in London, that didn’t really happen. People voted for him because he was the best candidate/ not running a massively racist campaign in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Don’t underestimate how much that annoyed people.

  4. D!ck-Flapped-Don

    @ Don and Steph

You two know-it-alls need your bonces knocked together, pair of old fish-wives the two of you

  5. some old queen

Oh I forgot this one; I need to spend more time up north.

Sunday Life: Arlene toasts poll success. Rochester ginger drink from Holland and Barrett was it?

DUP secured same, SF & SDLP down slightly, Peeps b4 Profit entrance in West Belfast and Martin McGuinness near an also ran in Derry.

Interesting that DUP who are now pitching towards equal marriage as ‘the Catholic Church of Northern Ireland’ should remain the same?

  6. Frilly Keane

For those who are even arsed
Count how many replies I’ve posted on AMMcN colums.
    All of them

And feel free to report back

Alfie Newman was no more scared off than Mani

He was one of better Blueshirts operators who tripped himself
    That’s all

    Now go feast on that
I’ve ta’ get ready for work

    1. Never Say Never Again

You’ve caused enough trouble here for one clickbait outrage session :)
