From top: Dr Julien Mercille; William Campbell

Journalist William Campbell’s excellent Here’s How current affairs podcast this week features pillow-lipped, Gallic-accented, elite-basher Dr Julien Mercille, often of this parish but known to ‘wander’.

William writes:

Is ‘pink pricing’ – charging higher prices for women’s products than for largely identical men’s ones – real?

Does it count as discrimination? Should it be made illegal?

And if women choose lower-paying careers, should society try to persuade them to do otherwise?

To hear two men debate this, listen here

Fight!

Here’s How

I like it when the men talk for me. My lady brain cant do hard thinking, I come over all funny

Mercille’s arguments were weak. He didn’t elaborate on obvious differences between products served to men and women, for instance a hair cut. He also didn’t bother to look at cases where men pay more than women for the same thing, for instance life assurance and motor insurance. Lazy statistics followed up by lazy commentary only serve to undermine Mercille’s convictions, not bolster them.

Life and motor insurance are based on risk. I could have short hair like a man and still pay 5x more for a haircut.

      1. Yeah, Ok

You could have your hair cut for a tenner if you went to a barber and less of your fancy hairdressers.

        1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

And if I had short hair and wanted it to be cut like a man’s, maybe I would. If I wanted it cut like a women’s, I might be trouble.

          1. Eliot Rosewater

That would suggest there’s a difference in the quality between the two, hence paying over the odds for it.

          2. Clampers Outside!

You might want to add the time difference, in and out in ten minutes for a guy… as opposed to two magazines and novella read before you even start cutting for the ladies.

          3. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Nope. Same haircut, different styles, but women also have to put up with 6x more faff than actually cutting

          4. Spagnolia von Hoop

Yep, painful. Not a newspaper to read; only gossip, Kate Middleton and fashion tips. Then they ask you are you going out tonight, where are you going on your holidays and tell you the weather doesn’t know what it’s going to do. Sick of this bs. Is there not one proprietor of these awful salons willing to change this?

          5. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

You should be able to book an express appointment. No faff, just cut the goddamn hair and let me get on with my day.

I did found one hairdressers that has national geographic – that’s a bonus. Still have to find one which consistently gives you booze though.

This entire thing is hillarious, right down to the hand wringing ‘2 men discussing this’ at the end.

Bodger has the trolling down to a tee.

  3. MoyestWithExcitement

I’ve not listened to the podcast but charging different prices to different markets for the same product/service is extremely common and often has nothing to do with cost. If you think the market will pay more, you will charge more. Wealthy hipsters for instance. No idea if they’re doing it to women specifically but it’s far from unrealistic to think they are.

How to convince your audience that you weally weally are an academic:
    Lesson 1:
    1) Mumble “Hypothesis “

    1. Cup of tea anyone?

a real man should use a safety razor. 10 replacement blades for under a fiver. None of this 5 blades muck. And a bar of shaving soap costs a under a tenner and lasts well over a year.

and if you but one of those sonic or vibrating razors your just kidding yourself.

  5. Custo

The products (deoderant, moisturiser, razors etc) are exactly the same whether in gun metal grey macho packaging or pink packaging.

If anyone is angry that they;re paying more for the pink, then that’s all on them.

    It’s all magic beans.

  6. rotide

So i pressed play on a random segment of this for a laugh…

“When there is an injustice, you cannot blame the victims”

He was talking about mens and womens shaving cream. The injustice of shaving cream and its victims.

Oh Juliene, it’s a good thing you’re pretty (as Anne is so fond of pointing out)

    11/10. Did not dissapoint.

    1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Real men use the blood of the last animal they killed anyway

  7. Rowsdower

    Jesus, he is embarrassing.

Everytime the presenter brings up something that refutes him, he just dismisses it would some utterly flippant stupidity “Sure, you could do a study on that”

  8. Billlebaars

Oof, that was difficult to listen to. Julien, I’m as much as a social justice warrior as you are, but your arguments were very weak and you appeared to know very little behind the scientific studies that supposedly supports them. I think William Campbell asked some good questions that certainly warrant further scrutiny, while your counter-arguments were simply unscientific and your analogies were crude and tangential.
Your an academic, please let your research and reading support your advocacy, not the other way round.

      1. Peter Dempsey

” I’m as much as a social justice warrior as you are”

That’s not something to be proud of.
