Breakingnews.ie reports:
Full-time second-level teacher Luke Saunders, founder of Studyclix.ie,the website that breaks down Junior and Leaving Certificate exam questions by topic, gives his expert opinion on today’s English papers.
“For the first time ever within a Leaving Cert paper students were asked to write a blog post, a sign that examiners are moving with the times.”
“Higher level students were asked to write a blog post for an online campaign that opposed public expenditure on space exploration while ordinary level students were asked to imagine they were tourists and to write a travel blog based on their experiences and views on Ireland.”
Leaving and Junior Cert first papers are over: here’s what was on them (Breakingnews.ie)
Yeah because blogging is central to language
Yes, communicating in different registers is central to language.
Wow – maybe someday some of them will grow up and realise their dream to be John Moynes! What a time to be alive.
Just in case you’re thinking of making this a daily thing throughout the exams, know this : no-one who has done their Leaving Cert or Junior Cert wants to read about other people doing it. It’s as dull as listening to someone describe what dream they had last night.
File with Frilly “W’acky” Keane and LJG (who must be in hospital, or dead) in the Recycle Bin.
I’ve done both, and would be interested in hearing about certain subjects. So, y’know.
Don’t read it then.
@The Gawn
Others may draw solace from the post , its interesting
Don’t they mean ‘Comprehension’ and ‘Composition’?
I suppose it is only a higher level English examination.
Comprehending and composing are perfectly cromulent words, they’ve obviously just changed the terms to their verb form.
I’m off to look up more cromulent words. I shall return interfrastically!
Is this just the essay question renamed as a blog post question?
Yes
BUT it creates the silly idea in the students head that it isn’t as formal, because blog posts are done in shorthand, slang, even text speak… A lot of people will lose marks for being loose with their structure here
Well blog posts are only a venue and can be a medium for any form of writing, including formally structured essays. Seems like calling it a blog-post is a bit redundant? Or cleverly relevant? Can’t decide.
Maybe its a trick so on the examiners part?
Because life isn’t easy, and neither are exams.
I would have been too cute to do the blog. Leave it til next year when you’ll know what they want from it. New questions are to be avoided.
BOOM.
God those sound like boring blogs.
Emma O Kelly will be on the Six One this evening wetting herself with excitement delivering the JC/LC news.
She was! Heh. Reporting from Cork.
Extra marks available for clickbait headlines to drive ‘social lift’.
Google page ranking would also be a concern. Maybe scope for monetising content? “Let’s not spend money on outer-space, instead make the most of your space with the new IKEA catalogue.”
ha
Can I bring my phone in to the exam just for the purpose of generating Amazon affiliate links?
“a sign that examiners are moving with the times”
Totally. They’re right up to the late 90’s with this poo. Next year they’ll have economics questions asking them to estimate the financial impact of the millennium bug.
I’d probably waste all my time creating a banner to go at the top of my blog and get nothing written.
Or you’d spend most of your time dealing with trolls in the comment section.
‘…dealing with trolls in the comment section.
That’s not something I was
making plans for Nigel.
Do you like my new avatar?
-Not this one, the other one.
I was going to post a video by a group called XTC, but I changed my mind.
-It would’ve been like repeating myself, like repeating what I just posted by posting a ‘copy & paste’ from somewhere else…something that I robbed my earlier content from.
Think ‘Anne’, but funny. And in reverse…
Instead I’m going to post this ‘more-appropriate’ video by XTC, because it’s the best thing they ever did.

That song escalates quickly.
I like it too.
Here’s another one that’s quite good…
I think…
I wasn’t listening, I was reminiscing…about when I bought this album (WITH the limited edition free remix album called Go+) from the boot of a car in the car park of the Embankment pub, Tallaght.
(…too busy reading the album cover…I began to wonder….was THAT the first time I encountered the concept of ‘trolling’, way back in 1978? Is this the reason I’ve become what I pretend I am?
XTC…They were the ONLY reason I EVER went to college. They were playing in Belfield one night and me and me mate Eamonn went. He still owes me £10. (NOT €10, £10)
…but I digress.)

No Thugs in our House pretty epic too..

So much for my future in British Steel.
It is actually being relaunched as ‘British Steel’

So asked to do a fake blog, sura I suppose 90% of blogs are fake so tis OK.
Who are you to ask that question…Joe blogs?
Leaving Cert? Who cares what kids do? This isn’t news. We’ll have reports on school discos next.
The Leaving Cert was a piece of piss.
Generally I found the people who said that were the people who weren’t so forthcoming with their “amazing” results afterwards.
