Hugh Byrne, from Dublin; Rob Argent, from England; and Vivienne Stuettgen, from Germany, are PhD students in science areas in UCD.

Hugh writes:

We produced this video as part of a social entrepreneurship module that we all completed as part of our PhD programmes in the innovation academy in UCD. The module aims at identifying social problems and coming up with novel solutions to challenge them.

We’re trying to raise awareness about homelessness in Dublin and Ireland and the possible uses of derelict buildings in the city.

The Galway Simon community have 93 staff and spent 3 million on wages last year. They are not even the largest homeless charity in Galway.

This is for an area with an estimated 300 homeless.

These charities exist to propogate themselves and homelessness itself.

      Yes Joni.

All that Simon Community do is look after the 300 homeless. They don’t do any other work. Thanks for clearing that up…

        From their site.
Galway Simon Community is a homeless charity who provides housing, support and health care services to the homeless in the West of Ireland.

Well done, i think that’s the fastest I’ve made somebody look like an idiot.

Maybe it’s a sign of how effective they are that there is only 300 homeless in the city?

So what is their novel solution to tackle homelessness? (I haven’t watched the video as it doesn’t work in here)
