It’s uncomfortable for sure but maybe not a bad thing, we should have these uncomfortable conversations and we need to make our choices with our eyes open.
I’m pro choice by the way but can understand the other side of the argument which can’t be completely written off as religious nuttery.
I was around for the pictures of dead fetuses being handed out after mass on a weekday, these people will stoop a lot lower to maintain their control on womens’ bodies.

I saw a sticker in a car window the other day, with a picture of a foetus in vitro and the caption “I’ll be paying for Ireland someday” and a pro-life slogan. So many logical fallacies.
Apparently women should be breeding so there’s enough people to change their adult nappies in the nursing home in years to come!

All this stuff is trivial freedom of speech, if you want to hit back you need facts.
Take the example from the freakonomics book about how New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was credited for cleaning up the city of multiple levels of crime and daily assaults, rapes and murders.
Well it was all BS because what really made the difference was abortion laws being changed twenty years earlier. Just like investing in anything with a long term view you will eventually see the fruits in credible results.
Less people being forced to have unwanted babies is better for everyone.
If you really want to help then be anti-NIMBY and lobby you’re local TD and demand an abortion clinic in your backyard until we have one in every postcode and county.
If you’re not pro abortion you’re not just against womens rights, you’re anti-science and basic common sense.

There’s some debate as to whether the reduction in crime has a causative link to abortion access or a correlative one, but it’s definitely worth comparing to Ireland, as our current method of letting women travel if they have the money and can access the information definitely unfairly punishes poor people.
It’s also worth noting the difference in teen pregnancy rates in areas with good sex education and access to abortion (such as, say New York), and those where there is little or no sex ed and highly restrictive access to abortion.

Reality is that most abortions take place in <9 weeks by women who are 18-25.
Too early for any tests so show up problems.
They just don't want to be pregnant full stop for whatever reason – too young, too poor, unstable relationships, want to be a proper adult first.
We don't have to repeal the 8th to make affordabe contraception avaailble for this age group. Perhaps that is something that can be done that would have widespread support?
You don’t just have to be able to afford it, you have to use it too.
Youth defence view contraception like condoms as creating an environment of casual sex that leads to unwanted pregancies and they claim others like the pill are abortifacient.
So you wont get help from them in those areas

Pro-life / anti choice people believe that the foetus is a young person. Is this news to you, or are you just offended that they have chosen to air their view when you had your camera phone to hand?

What’s the matter? Isn’t it worth talking about the potential impacts of removing the 8th Amendment and making abortion more freely availabe?
Making abortion more freely available in England has led to 90% of those foetuses with Downs Syndrome aborted. So it is a very relevant part of the debate.
It’s important to have the discussion. It educates. Even in the last week we’ve seen a very prominent pro-choice TD shoe that she is entirely misinformed on the numbers of foetuses with Downs Syndrome being aborted in parts of the UK.
Some will say that this is “muddying the water” and itd all about FFM but removing the 8th can have very significant impacts.
90% of those who opted for the amnio test, lots of women don’t, due to the risk of miscarriage. Anti choice groups dehumanise Down Syndrome kids with this kind of campaign, equating them with puppies (aw look aren’t they so cute!), not people with complex health and educational needs. If a woman gets a diagnosis and feels she isn’t capable of providing the lifelong care and protection needed then that’s her decision, particularly if she’s an older woman forseeing that she and her partner could be into their 70s and 80s caring for their special needs child. Will youth defense provide for the child when the parents are no longer capable?
Please Daisy. Nothing dehumanises a person more than saying they are not worthy of life or saying that the medical condition they suffer from gives others the excuse to say they are too much of a burden.
But I’m glad we’re having this debate. The billboard has worked. It’s harder to stand over abortion when we speak about the people potentially affected by it.
absolute joke of a pic. not all abnormalities are Downs, some more horrific,. fact is we are on par with the Arab countries on this matter and we lag behind our European counterparts. I believe if we had a referendum it would get passed but the governent is too chicken to do so. Ive being hearing this abortion issue for the last 25 yrs just do it ffs . Its not a question that these babies will not be loved, you have to look at the broader picture. every case is different and no one has the right to tell people what to do. repeal it ta fupp
We should look at Poland’s efforts to restrict and be concerned. We’re supposed to be a bit ahead of their regime and you yet cannot abort in the case of a fatal foetal abnormality. European groups are trying to restrict abortion access much the same way the Texans were..and even if you could be pro choice but privately oppposed, we need to allow access for women.
