Interestingly, Dahl thought Wilder too cherub-faced for the Willy Wonka role and too American. His preferred choice was Spike Milligan – whom the directors thought too weird, and hence opted for Wilder.

      RIP.

Ye, that would have been a starkly different movie, I’d love to see how that would have played out.

On a side note, look up Spike Milligan’s doco on Peter Sellers mental problems…. it’s wild as hell and weird on top.

Cheer up folks, it’s a sad moment but look towards the upside…

It’s another marathon of great films and brief interviews and appearences to enjoy all over again in his honour.

He gave us a hell of a lot of funny moments so I’ll be celebrating in the spirit of his comedic generosity.

Name your favourite bit, scene or saying he did….

-Off the top of my head : The bit where he keeps correcting people about his name being ” Dr. Franken – steen ” and not ” Dr. Frankenstein “… lol

Blazing Saddles – “You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.”

    Brilliant comic actor. RIP
