From top: Star Wars poster featuring Felicity Jones (top) and Inferno Dublin Bus ad.

Alan O Regan writes:

I saw a poster for Inferno on a Dublin Bus this morning. I thought the actress looked like Felicity Jones so I was scanning the poster for her name. No sign of her name on the poster despite sharing prominence (space-wise) with Tom Hanks.

Now I know Tom Hanks is a huge star and everything but to not have his co-star’s name on the poster at all?

It’s a pity too because I was just thinking how great it was that she’s featured so prominently on the new Star Wars poster (with the men much less so) and in a non-sexualised way and that this was a good step forward.

Anyway, if it was obvious enough to slap me out of my usual apathy I thought it can’t be right.

Anyone?

Y’know, people complain about code words and ‘dog whistles’ and the like, but I actually like them. It allows me to easily dismiss people and their arguments and move on.

in fairness if it was a male costar in Inferno he’d have his name up. this way it’s more like an anonymous Bond girl

oh you’re going to be so annoyed when you figure out that it is actually man that features most prominently in the star wars poster too

It is nice to see a female star in a poster without having to look through her legs to see the other stars. And she’s fully clothed so fair play Disney. I have a 5 year old daughter who loves Star Wars Rebels which is great as the female characters are as integral to the plot as the males and believe me that’s a rarity. Even when Warner Brothers introduced a cartoon series for the female DC Superheros they changed them to big eyed cutsey versions of themselves and stuck them in a High School.

Just the other day she was playing with a friend after school and they were discussing how boys can marry boys and girls can marry girls and they agreed they would marry a boy because “boys are much better at rescuing girls.”

” they agreed they would marry a boy because “boys are much better at rescuing girls.””

It’s OK Repro, we didn’t think she was growing up gay. Relax. It’s OK.

Girls no not dig guys who are ‘feminists’. They just don’t.

As you’re sitting there bemoaning how hard it is for that poor Hollywood actress, she’s checking out the silent Polish carpenter.

How do you guys know who people are? I’m rubbish at guessing though I got Pablo today

I’ve them pegged as he who should not be named but I’m generally wrong on these things

If it helps, although I’m worse than Dόn Pídgéόní at remembering names, it’s usually the ones who makes the accusation of double-identities (or more) who are the actual culprits.

            They never stay for long.
            Never.

I’m really fed up with Broadsheet allowing people to come back under different usernames and restarting poo-stirring again

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

I think there are one or two people who post under multiple logins which takes dedication but really, who has the time?! It must get very confusing remembering who you are.

          2. Kieran NYC

Someone who posts under a Frilly Keane sound-alike a couple of months ago SAID he posts under multiple names just to stir poo.

Like what’s the point on posting here if that kind of easily-policed crap goes on?

          3. sǝɯǝɯʇɐpɐq

            @ Le Pigeon-Donkey;

I hope that ‘he who should not be named’ doesn’t refer to me.
            – Why do I get attacked all the time? Is it because of my persecution-complex?

I wouldn’t do ANYTHING like that, ever. I have a modicum of integrity, and I value it.

This is the type of nonsense we search to care about when we’re not under threat from natural disasters or famine.

    1. Boy M5

      Exactly.

Imagine standing in Aleppo, aghast at that bus poster and tweeting your faux disgust as a missile whistles past to wipe out your entire family who are frantically voting for Syria’s Got Talent.

Basically most of the above posts (with the exception of ReproBertie’s) are why casual sexism is ‘normal’ on things like film posters. You all seem quite content with it so why bother to point it out. It;s just life huh. And comparing it to war is just idiocy. Every injustice is relative.

    1. Boy M5

You need to hobble yourself or something to have something real to worry about.

Even Germaine Greer is laughing her balls off.

there’s enough real sexism around the place without getting annoyed about this non-incident. maybe she does eff all in the tom hanks movie. and by the way, ghostbusters was awful. and i can say that. its not sexist to say that. it was an awful movie.
