Social Democrat-turned-Fianna Fáil TD Stephen Donnelly (centre) with party leader Micheál Martin at Leinster House yesterday
A slap-headed deputy Steve
Did something his fans can’t believe
He claimed to be best
But when put to the test
He left all his voters to grieve.

…heard Stephen Donnelly on Drivetime yesterday and again on Vinb…thought he was very unconvincing…you would have thought he would have his rationale on this well thought through…maybe what the Soc Dems said about him being lazy has some substance…
Maybe. But it doesn’t really surprise me much.
In fairness it’s hard to do business with single issues ideologues like Clare Daly and Catherine Murphy. At least in Continuity Fianna Fáil he can position on the non paramilitary wing, get more Dáil speaking time etc
More exposure in the papers
And there is a strong FF middle class professional vote in North Wicklow since the days of Dick Roche
What was fun today was hearing Pat Casey “explain ” the FF Wicklow strategy
Single issue ideologues? Seriously?
Go on then
Is he not Mr Brexit now? Seems pretty singular
He can forget about the supposed FF Middle Class professional vote in Wicklow. His days are numbered as Dick Roche learnt back in the day. These are the same voters who secretly backed Donnelly in 2011and they will do to Donnelly what they did to Roche. He’snow vulnerable to an independent candidate emerging to fill the space he’s left vacant.
We will see Jeff
Name dropping, casual reference to internal mechanics, etc. do not change the fact that FF are only relevant to 1) a few FF personal business partners, 2) pockets of catholic clergy, 3) habitual FF voters, who can never really articulate why they vote FF.
How ‘smartly’ anyone moves within a party structure is irrelevant if it has no positive effect on the entire country’s well being. I.e. we, the taxpayers wasted our money by paying them. You hired someone to build your house extension and paid upfront, instead the someone is paving your neighbour’s driveway at your expense and having a good hearty laugh over tea. You then ring up a private builder, pay him again to get that original job done.
That’s what ‘to do business’ with FF mean. Unless you’re from minority of category 1)
Slap headed? Is that level of vindictive personal abuse really necessary John and broadsheet?
In my area, he is known as ‘the slap-headed one?’ and I don’t believe it’s intended maliciously.
We do love a good slaggin so we do.
Ok I guess we would have to ask him if he likes his epithet or otherwise
A very fair point.
But I think, if you’re going to work in the public eye, you need to have a thick skin, because people will say things about you (esp in politics). I’m not saying its nice or acceptable, but Stephen would have been aware of that, I’d imagine, to some degree before getting involved with politics.
I don’t think it’s necessary to comment on anyone’s appearance. People seem to think there’s a carte blanche when it comes to politicians, the things said about Mary Harney over the years…
agree with both of you
While I’m not overly surprised by this, i do feel a twinge of sadness. He was a man of considerable integraty . This unfortunately leaves him in the “can’t really be taken seriously” category. Sad, really. but..mmfh or the like.
No harm in emailing just to express surprise, disappointment, anger etc. He might have second thoughts.
