Apparently she went via dublin->edinburgh->helsinki->sofia->cairo->moscow->mexico city, and then direct to seattle. said it worked out better for her.

Spending one year at home with their electorate, constituencies and visiting communities would be a really positive move.

We are unique in that our (kind of made-up) national holiday is celebrated in countries across the world. Most other premiers would give their left bollock for a guaranteed annual sit-down and photo op with the U.S. President; we need to continue to exploit the whole St. Patrick thing for all it is worth.

  Those who go… can still fly economy and stay in the US equivalent of Jury’s or any other business traveler hotel chain, in fairness.

One would assume that the Ministers flying long haul (Asia not US) would fly business class. They are senior goverment officials afterall.
While at their destination I would have thougt that the embassy would have diplomatic cars that can be used or at least have use of a car service. Its hardly appropriate for a minister to be trying to flag a taxi down in the middle of the street (like a commoner).
The costs of cars are incidental to the costs of the trip and the convenience for a senior official far out weighs the cost increase over a taxi.
As for accomodation, security must take precedence over cost. If travelling in Asia I know the company I work for only uses a limited number of (very nice) hotels for security reasons. Personally I think they are paranoid especially for a lowly engineer such as myself. For ministers I would expect them not to be staying in a hovel just for the sake of optics.
