Last night.

Leinster House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen (top) and Fine Gael’s Martin Heydon (above) address media following the final vote on the Draft Report of the Joint Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services.

The Dáil will today debate a motion on the final report while TDs will vote on the motion tomorrow.

The deal includes several Fianna Fáil concessions including a commitment to install water meters in newly built houses (see triumphant Irish Independent editorial below).

    Common sense prevails huh?

So the implication is the hundreds of thousands who’ve gotten themselves up to the capital to march in protest mustn’t have any common sense.. hmmm k.

    1. Lord Snowflakee

Yep that’s exactly it. While no doubt some did genuinely disagree with the idea of water charges, the fact is that most of the protesters were vacuous slogan chanters and career anarchists who don’t understand politics, governance, or have any concept of shared, civic responsibility.

        lol nice trolling.

I’d say lots of people understand politics, ergo politicians are not very well respected amongst the general population. Despised might even be more accurate.

They keep voting for them all the same though Anne. The same old shower of eejits year after year saying the same things over and over. That suggests to me the intelligence level of the average voter isn’t high either.

I think myself people vote for the individual politician whose probably getting stuff done locally fulfilling the role of co councillors..they aren’t looking at their party’s policies. I don’t know how intelligent or not that makes people, or how badly structured Irish politics is.

you’re too nice, even when you try to be mean you can’t, that’s why you’ve broken so many hearts :’-)

In my head, when you post one of these comments complaining about other commenters, I get an image of a little boy crying ‘Teacher, teeeeeacher, Polly was meeeean to meeeeee.’

            And then I laugh.

            True story.

…you have to hand it to the blueshirts…Coveney and Varadkar stood up to the FFers and they crumpled…think the FFers have thrown in the towel…

They’re two divisions of the one party. We have to choose between gombeen corrupt farmers or gombeen corrupt small business owners.

      1. This monkey's gone to heaven

Last time out we also had those gombeen middle-class “socialists” sneering at the Shinners/PBP

    2. Lord Snowflakee

At least they have the courage of their blueshirt convictions, not like the other crowd who can’t decide which side they are on, and their pig-ignorant rural and cowboy builder voters mostly don’t care anyway

      1. martco

which is all fine and well if you believe in their ideology

maybe this time the people who don’t will use their vote to make a real change come next GE

  4. MoyestWithExcitement

Disgusting. This is all theatre. Anyone got a link to the Indo’s stance on Apple taxes given their sneering at FF (not that I have sympathy for those fraudsters) for “agreeing that EU directives do have to be adhered to” and that “certain parties want th benefit of EU membership” but want to take an “a la carte” approach to their rules?

The “Independent” does what it’s told, always has, whether from it’s offshore business owners to various other business and security inputs. Any resistance to the corporate takeover of our society is demonised immediately as communism, some form of bewildering mental illness or or just outright terrorism. The worrying thing is that people keep buying the rag.

…are you saying that Fionnan Sheahan is subject to influences other than upholding that fine tradition of press independence and fearless reporting of the truth…

It is worth asking again how the “generous allowance” of 133 litres per day was arrived at. Since it appears that the British use an average of 149 litres a day, and the Americans between 80 and 100 gallons – are we then a filthy lot? Alternatively, one could suspect that the allowance is set deliberately low so as to facilitate ‘levies’ for ‘excessive usr’. We’ll see about that.

    1. Lord Snowflakee

      Or to encourage conservation maybe?

Perish the thought that selfish wasters would be made pay for overuse of a precious national costly resource.

    2. Cian

It depends: according to this site http://www.onaverage.co.uk/consumption-averages/average-water-usage the 150 is for a single person. As you increase the number of people in a house, the average water consumption falls. So for 2 people it’s 138l/day; for 3 people it’s 122l/day

      according to this it’s 133l/day http://www.anglianwater.co.uk/environment/how-you-can-help/calculate-usage.aspx

according to Wikipedia the average urban use is 112l. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_supply_and_sanitation_in_the_Republic_of_Ireland

  6. Spaghetti Hoop

‘Penalise’ the water-wasters, ‘incompetence’, ‘recklessness’. The tone and language really helps to sell the issue to the bill-payer doesn’t it? To hell with fixing the leaks, conservation and end of boil-notices.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

People are dogs and need to be taught to behave through punishment and threats. Not me though. I’m a civilised grown up. It’s the rest of you peasants that need to do better. I’m great, me.

      1. Sheik Yahbouti

Not even a reach around, Moyest – just rum, sodomy and the lash (err, there’s been no rum since 2000 ;-))

  7. Sheik Yahbouti

‘A review after five years ‘? What a joke. Who do these apes think they are fooling?
