Probably some hill walkers or campers with a careless cigarette. Defiantly not some local farmer(s).

Didn’t you read the article? The fire just “broke out” ok?! Wildfires are just a factor of life in our temperate maritime climate. The arid, cork-dry landscapes in places such as Sligo and Kerry are like tinder just waiting to go up. It can’t be helped.

It seems around here that farmers are the only acceptable working class* to criticise and generalise

        *who actually work

But a maritime climate doesn’t have long dry spells. Rain is dispersed throughout. Sligo and Kerry are more like a wrung-out sponge than a cork!

…he shall not hear the bitern cry…nor the corncrake, cuckoo, curlew, groose, partridge…

Sadly fires like this are caused quite often in South Wales (U.K) by arsonists. They have no regard for the hundreds of animals and birds burned alive, and these fires usually happen during dry spells and school holidays. If this was caused by a farmer burning off gorse, shame on him for his wanton disregard of the consequences. Likewise if it was caused accidentally by hill walkers. What is very worrying is that it may have been caused by bored hooligans with nothing else to do but cause damage and destruction and terrible suffering to animals and their young.
