Chants To Shine

at

This Saturday.

Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) is organising a National Homeless Demonstration.

Further to this, ICHH writes:

Attention! We need your ideas – what slogans, and chants should we use for Saturday’s march?

Anyone?

sorry about the knee jerk above. my own personal favourite is ‘ a man who lives everywhere lives nowhere’.

    I used to love singing
“we bought the lad from sunny Spain, he gets the ball and scores again, Fernando Torres Liverpool’s number nine” until one day I didn’t any more :(

“We’ve no homes to go to”
    “Cherish Us Citizens Equally”
“Where are our equal rights? Where are our equal opportunities?”
    “Make Homes, No Profits”
    “We’re not Vulture Food”

Maybe march on Dublin City Council’s offices instead of Dáil Eireann(?)

DCC are responsible for HAP, provision of homeless services and social housing within the capital. And they voted to reduce property tax, thereby reducing the funding available to pay for these services.

Yeah, Margaret Thatcher always blamed local councils for her ineptitude as well.
      Homelessness;
      1. Isn’t caused by a reduction in property tax.
      2. Exists outside of Dublin

        1. All the services that I listed are funded by LPT; if you cut LPT, you have less money for these services. You are supposed to be the left-wing one, remember? You should be in favour of property taxes

        2. Homelessness/housing crisis is very, very much centred in Dublin.

        1. Fact Checker

It is absurd to suggest either that:
          1) Homelessness in Dublin is predominantly people ‘from’ Dublin
          2) That it should be paid for by people resident in Dublin

It is at least a national problem and probably an international one.

Anyway, most of the policy is set centrally. So is the funding. It is only really the implementation which is done at local authority level.

            1) Does that make a difference(?)
            2) Well, in the end, most things for by people in Dublin, through income transfers, etc.

What I am saying is this is one of the few areas over which councils have responsibility; if DCC decided to zone some more land/stop opposing developments over a certain number of stories, it would make significant dent in the housing crisis.

So getting out of the way of the private sector is the way to solve a social crisis?

You’re more or less exposing yourself as a tribalist here. I’m “supposed” to be left wing so I’m “supposed” to have a certain opinion on something. And no, cutting funding for people who are already homeless doesn’t stop homelessness. I don’t know where to even begin with that. Your obsession with blaming Dublin City Council is curious but I’m sure the fact that Sinn Féin are the largest party has absolutely nothing to do with it.

          1. Rob_G

” cutting funding for people who are already homeless doesn’t stop homelessness” – certainly makes it a lot more difficult to to tackles homelessness if you defund the services that you use to tackle it.

And Fine Gael were equally as enthusiastic in cutting LPT as Sinn Féin; I also blame them in this instance.

          2. MoyestWithExcitement

Services for people that are ALREADY HOMELESS don’t do much to PREVENT people becoming homeless.
