Room To Improve

Savills has concluded the sale of just under 9 acres of land on RTÈs Donnybrook campus to Cairn Homes Plc.

“RTÉ is happy to confirm the sale of land on our Donnybrook site. Our decision to sell this land was driven by the fact that, since 2008, RTÉ has been operating with vastly reduced commercial and licence fee income, approximately €100m annually.

As a result, we have been under-investing in the organisation for almost a decade, a situation that is unsustainable.

The funds raised will now be invested in capital projects, including much-needed technology upgrades and key digital infrastructure, and in making important changes to our organisational structure, essential workplace improvements, and reducing debt levels.

RTÉ is playing catch-up in an industry and market that is evolving rapidly, as Irish audiences embrace new technologies which are influencing how and when they consume content, including RTE content.

The investment which has been enabled by this land sale, along with further restructuring of the organisation, will allow us to better serve the needs of our audiences.”

Dee Forbes, Director-General RTÉ, this afternoon.

How much?

€107.5m!

I’d put money down you will still be looking at a constantly buffering screen if you make any attempt to watch euro 2020.

In 2020 you will still not be able to use RTE with a chromecast, still have a buffering screen, still have Tubs on every friday night with his obsession on 60’s American culture, JFK and Jonny Carson. They’ll be looking for more cash in use course…

Are RTE still paying for TV shows that we can already watch on other Free to Air stations?

RTE, money goes in, poop comes out. More money goes in, more poop comes out.

But apparently they’ve been getting less money, yet the poop still flows.
My Mammy said if you starve the bug, the diarrhea will stop. So cut all funding now and see how they get on.

Tell yer mammy she is very wise.

We can only hope and dream it happens…. or maybe some other group of people get together and just build a better alternative..

Speaking of unsustainable, what are they planning to do when that hundred mill runs out? It’s not that much money. They turned over 150 mill in 2015.

      Yes, that would be fantastic.
Lets hope the planners screw over an actual development company which is currently developing sites across Dublin because we don’t need no houses!!
      That’ll teach them!

Im not getting how RTE gets the keep the proceeds from the sale of public land …

Did the Gardai not get in trouble for something similar ?

    1. Andrew

      Me neither.
I also do not get why RTE need to be located where they are.
TV3 are in an Industrial Estate in Ballymount. Can’t RTE do the same?
They could sell the whole site then.

Does this mean the public won’t have to watch repeats of repeated repeats anymore.
    Didn’t think so.

It’s being pished away on the redundancies. Investment me hoop. Would be nice to be an RTE lifer getting a slice of that ‘investment’ action before heading off to Albufeira for three months of the year.
