Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar talking to the media on his way into the Data Conference at the Convention Centre Dublin

Amid the news of a new Taoiseach in the Dáil and the announcement of his Cabinet, the news that Leo Varadkar had confirmed an abortion referendum, seemed to slip through the cracks.

Yesterday he confirmed that the referendum will take place sometime next year.

He said Health Minister Simon Harris would be responsible for bringing forward legislation to allow for the referendum on the eight amendment, which gives an equal right to life to the mother and the unborn….

Varadkar announces abortion referendum for next year (Newstalk)

I’m slightly astonished you haven’t covered this at all today..

Rotide I was about to link that to listrade’s piece earlier. Fair play

Announces a referendum within 3 hours of becoming Taoiseach. Truly an enemy of the left

      1. MoyestWithExcitement

LOL! Poor little roditde is getting hysterical because the peasants won’t lick Leo’s boots with him.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Hey, buddy. Right wing demogogues don’t become ‘friends of the left’ because they announced an abortion referendum for 2 years away. That’s not how life works. Of course, it is always troubling to see simple minds at work like yours. You are literally the kinds of people that dictatorships are built on. You will lap up any lip service The Benevolant Leader gives you and demand the peasants fall in line behind him.

      1. Steve

Moyest – the personal attacks from behind the safety of an IP address when something annoys ye.

        Disappointing mate

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

You mean like the personal attack you made against me in the thread about employment figures? Yeah, it’s always interesting to watch trolls like you wet yourselves when you get a taste of your own medicine.

          1. Steve

Me saying you argue black is white vs. You saying I have a simple mind and support the rise of “dictators”?

            Hmm

      2. rotide

It’s funny how the kind of people that dictatorships are built on are the very ones that accuse others of being the types of people that dictatorships are built on.

I also love how Leo has gone from FG backbencher to ‘right wing demagogue’ in less time that it takes to look up the word Hyperbole in a dictionary

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

          “It’s funny how…”

It’s funny how pseduo intellectual trolls with self esteem problems always start sentences with ‘It’s funny how’.

“the kind of people that dictatorships are built on are the very ones that accuse others of being the types of people that dictatorships are built on.”

That sounds REALLY like the current fashionable alt right bedwetter argument about how anti fascists are the real fascists. They used to use ‘People who bring up racism are the real racists”‘ not long ago. It’s of course, a hilariously stupid argument made by shut ins.

“I also love how Leo has gone from FG backbencher to ‘right wing demagogue’ in less time that it takes to look up the word Hyperbole in a dictionary”

Nah, it takes a while to say refernda are undemocratic when you don’t get the results you want and to start an advertising campaign to demonise the poor. Keep up with your amazingly stupid musings though, rotide. They’re *genuinely* hilarious.

Moyest you are so spot on. Speak your mind. ‘During times of universal deceit, telling the truth become a revolutionary act’. Of course you know who said that and when it was said. No Rotide it wasn’t in 1984

          2. Rob_G

@ Johnny: I am not sure what you are getting at. I don’t think anyone is trying to prevent Moyest from expressing himself; merely pointing out one of his occasional leaps of logic.

    1. rotide

      So instead of :
“This is a step in the right direction” or,
“This is good but let’s see how much they take the CA recommendation into account”

You go with the snide option.

      1. MoyestWithExcitement

You mean like your post above where you said “BURN THE WITCH”? You couldn’t just celebrate a good news story, no? You had to sneer and snipe at the public? What is wrong with you? Bodger, seriously, why have you not banned this troll?

      2. Daisy Chainsaw

We’re dealing with “Not One Red Cent” Leo here. Big on populist statements, small on actual delivery.

    2. AlisonT

Need to update that caption as that is a picture of Leo refusing to talk to the press. he cut out the press yesterday as he didn’t want to explain his corrupt agreement to the AGs promotion or his payoff of friends using 4 super jr. ministries even though the law only allows for 2. Top top it off he has reduced the number of women in the cabinet. What a first day.

    1. Rob_G

      I agree.

Leo could announce free abortions for all, performed personally by Noam Chomsky and Bernie Sanders, starting from tomorrow, and some people could still find cause to complain.

      1. gromit

He had very little to do with calling this. It was on a plate. A large plate he was force fed due to the CA.

I will celebrate anything Leo does that doesn’t serve himself or pander to a particular few.

He is yet to do that. In his political career.

        1. Rob_G

I don’t disagree with you with regard to Leo’s track record to date, but the fact that he announced the referendum on his first day in office bodes well, IMO.

        2. AlisonT

+1 he has sent his career looking after his promotion prospects. He now has to actually deliver something.

      2. Cian

I would complain if Noam Chomsky and Bernie Sanders started to perform all abortions. As far as I’m aware neither of them are qualified to do so.

  2. mildred st. meadowlark

    Hurrah! At last.

I’ve had an official Meltdown Thursday today, so I missed just about everything today, but this – if Leo and Simo actually follow through – this is great news and real progress.

However… They’re slippery barstards and I wonder what precisely will the wording be, and their plans for afterward.

All in all, an interesting development, for suresies.

    1. bisted

…ah Mildred…you were doing so well there until you called the blueshirts slippery barstards…

      1. mildred st. meadowlark

I know. Couldn’t help myself, really.

Had you fooled for a min, didn’t I?

          1. mildred st. meadowlark

Never! I’m well-soured by the lot of them.

Glad you like it :) I’ve gotten back into art again. Did loads of Monet, and da Vinci, and the usual lads, but Magritte is mostly new to me and I really love his stuff.

  3. Zuppy International

Phony Leo the abortion-hugger has no mandate for his Eugenics programme: not that he cares.

Expect a raft of continuing fake news about how evil babies are attacking their mothers in utreo.

    1. Scoops4all

He’s like a child getting scolded in class. The really annoying rich kid that doesn’t have the bottle to be properly bold.

  4. Jimmey Russell

cant wait to assault no campaigners and destroy their property just like in the gay marriage referendum

  5. Milo

I do like the way BS herds some of the most hateful people in ireland into the same room to hate everyone else. Keeps them out of my way. Nice to see that room get smaller and more irrelevant day by day as it disappears up its own vortex of self loathing.

  6. Tony Groves

Let’s get this straight, we are supposed to give Leo credit for something he has to do in accordance with UN Human Rights legislation?
Okay, I’ll play along. Go Leo, go!

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Well Enda didn’t have the balls to do it.

It’s all about the wording and how the courts will interpret it really.

      1. Yep

Enda set up the assembly. We are where we are “because” of him. We need to stop adding all the weight of success and failure on the shoulders of this perceived “captain”.

This referendum is just one example of pressure from the citizenry that actually moves the needle. Leo and his ilk don’t do anything because they think it’s “right”.

  7. Sheik Yahbouti

“Health Minister Simon Harris will be RESPONSIBLE for bringing forward the legislation” – yeah, grand Leo, a smart and devious move.

    1. Yep

I think Murphy on Housing is equally filth. If you pay any attention to Leo, Murphy is a mate dipping his toe.

He won’t make a mark. He won’t correct clear problems. He will however be besties with the leader of the party for the foreseeable by doing funk all of use.

  8. kellma

Great. And would you throw in the reducing divorce down to 2 years while you are at it!
