The IFA has been lobbying for a support package for tillage farmers who lost crops in the 2016 harvest due to dire weather conditions.

The farmers are untouchable. If they’re not “maintaining” our natural landscape with their scorched earth policy they’re raiding our government buildings to demand a cash payout because their business model is based on the weather.

A chief super of some sort judging by his epaulette insignia and expanded waistline.
He’s looks a bit “oldskool”.
A veritable one- man crime fighting machine.
He’s an inspector… rectangular insignia on epaulette.
Forgot his tie apparently.
How the Gardaí can expect any respect from the public when they present themselves like this inspector is beyond me.
What a poor example to show the younger new recruits/probationer Gardaí.
I would have thought that lying under oath to frame innocent men would be a poor example to new recruits/probies.

Students get their heads bashed in, water protesters get done for “false imprisonment”, farmers get their hands held and another grant.

I remember a student protest a few years ago where they egged the Department of Finance. No heads were bashed.

So if the weather is crap, and tillage is down, then the Government need to pay these farmers?
I assume, then, that when the weather is good (HA!) that these lads will pay more than they are obligated to?
It does seem counter intuitive, especially when you look at farms as being small stand alone businesses.
I believe the thinking behind such packages is to keep farms afloat, which just about cover their costs (except for the large scale farms which are in the minority in this country). And why keep them afloat, why not just import? Because there’s a lot to be said for being self reliant when it comes to food, if need be.
Farms will get much more large scaled over time also, urbanization is an international trend and we can see what has happened elsewhere. But we’re only a few years past a time when agriculture was our biggest industry, you still have huge numbers and communities in agricultural areas. You can just pull the plug on them but there will be massive societal issues. keeping small farmers afloat until their farms are consolidated by their future generations is just a care of social protection. Which we’re meant to be supportive of, for everyone, not just people from whatever estate you may have grown up in :-)
