Last night.
Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge on RTÉ 1.
The Times Ireland Edition editor Richard Oakley attempted to lift the LID off the jar of TRUTH behind women’s long distance running events in Ireland.
Mr Oakley, who has stewarded women’s half marathons, claimed that many participants preferred to WALK even though they looked perfectly capable of JOGGING.
The claims were made to the eye-popping incredulity of fellow panellists Dr Ciara Kelly and Stefanie Preissner.
This could run and walk amiably run.
FIGHT!

Totally agree with Richard Oakley.
He was a dead man walking (haha) once he mentioned the women’s mini-marathon.
well if people would stop using the word marathon for a start for a 5 or 10 km
Exactly. The effort that goes in to preparing for a marathon is colossal. A normal healthy person could complete 5k without any training at all.
I think the clue is in the word healthy
out of shape has become the norm and acceptable almost
a little more truth and calling a spade a spade and a 5k just that would be a step in the right direction
9 weeks to get to 5k is in my humble opinion ridiculous
I’ll get you ( beginner) to that in 2 weeks comfortable injury free
+1.
Anytime I did the Women’s 10K I referred to it as a fun run / charity run. Most women doing it mixed it with jogging, walking briskly and strolling. Good old craic. Some people take these events WAY too seriously!
exactly and if you are a serious runner you are not really going to pick this race even as a training exercise unless you are sneakily trying to convert all your friends to running too so you can at last have someone to talk about dead toenails too etc
Everything you say today makes you sound sexier and sexier, Janet.
tis à talent of mine
wait till I get on to chaffing and fun vaseline tips
and the ” ginger bread man ” stories
that’s code *
Sacré bleu!
ah you haven’t lived till you’ve shat yourself in front of 1000’s of Parisiennes ;)
But its for CHARITY!!! (switches off brain, hands over money without researching the charity)
Ah here
Schoolboy error, Oakley.
there’s a cut off time to be considered a finisher
but for some people that’s not the motivation
and that’s thier prerogative
that’s why there are different starting groups based on ability
what a dope
he’s right about 5k though:)
Richard speaks the truth and the wimmins don’t like it.
There may be some truth in that. Men wouldn’t do that, because they can find the time to shirk their responsibilities and spend weekends and evenings running obsessively.
HAH
Zing!
I had no idea who he was when I flicked to this channel, not being able to not see him as a younger David Quinn I disliked him, had to check the guide to find out his name to stop disliking him!
Ah here, I can’t unsee that now!
Save for an elite group, the women’s 10k (so-called mini marathon) is merely a social occasion and a bit of craic. It’s also a strategy to raise funds for the charity industry.
+1
And yet when men go to the trouble of donning wigs, skirts and fake boobs to run it, they don’t even get a medal at the end. For shame.
*adjusts stockings
But they do get a taste of the fireman’s hose at Stage 7.
need to take marathon our of the title…. Its a 5k, a marathon is 42K.
*10K
Of course it is a fantastic event which does great things for fitness and all-round health and wellbeing.
I would say (having watched a few) that about a third of participants walk some or all of the event.
Who cares? The whole article is about nothing
ah and here was me thinking we could spend a leisurely afternoon comparing stats
I guess it wasn’t mentioned to be
Did you find the remote? ;)
this edit thing is a lie
Richie didn’t do himself any favours. he came across as a bit of an eejit, the sort of middle aged man who goes rock climbing , hiking etc and looks down on others.
Love that you can see the outrage form on yer wans face. The guy is correct of course, but lets not let that get in the way of a good pitchforking.
Meh feck that guy trying to beittle women doing a fun healthy activity.
Nigel, go back and watch the video.
Listen to the words and you’ll find no outrage is needed.
Shurrup I’m sharpening me pitchfork.
“we mollycoddle ourselves as adults and don’t push ourselves enough”
That’s the opening statement of this video (it would be nice to have more context but there’s enough here). He qualifies it by using the example of C25k, which last time i checked was completely gender neutral. He makes a good argument to back up his hypothesis. He then gives another weaker example of the WMM, This also backs up his hypothesis. If you take from this that he’s trying to ‘belittle women’ then you spend far too much time on twitter.
I don’t think he was belittling more like thinking they underestimate thier capabilities
he put it badly for sure
That was worth the price of admission. Top trolling by Oakley
Whether they walk or run they are still doing exercise and that has to be a good thing!
exercise shouldn’t be such a big deal you need congratulations possibly?
Those independent, successful women are mad.
Oakely’s point is that unless people are being competitive then they aren’t healthy. This is an attempt to impose the values of vulture capitalism into the sphere of personal bodily autonomy.
Some men love competitive sports. Until they wreck a knee or a hip. Then they stop competing age 30 and get fat. They spend the rest of their lives going to matches, drinking too much and roaring racist abuse at young athletes before informing us all that women shouldn’t play rugby “I just doesn’t sit right with me”. Oakley’s misogyny is an essential part of the package. He is an ass. Sport is not healthy, it isn’t supposed to be.
The strollers at the mini marathon have the right idea.
“Sport is not healthy, it isn’t supposed to be.”
Do you tell yourself this as you lay on the sofa gorging down yet another tube of Pringles?
This is a kind of snobbery
I’ve done the Womens Mini-Marathon 3 times
I brisk-walked it every time – my asthma is well-controlled but sustained running kicks off an attack after a while.
So I exercise at a less-intensive level.
Point is, I do it. Better that then watching it on the tellybox parked onna sofa
Not all of us are athletically built
well done for working within your capabilities, that is to be admired.
I think know his point badly put is that people congratulate themselves when they are capable of so much more and should push for more
that an unhealthy body has become the norm and people think they are unaware of what a beautiful machine they are letting rust in the garage
Go out for a longer run next week princess
Kill ‘em with kindness. That’s your motto writ large.
I get that – and I can certainly stand to get more exercise in
I think, however, that shame is the worst motivator of all…
yep I’d be more focused on the posative possibilities too,
he had a good message that he expressed badly
This is rape, there is no other word for it, he needs to be sacked from whatever job he has and viciously assaulted as soon as possible. Thousands of men have been emboldened and radicalized by this and are assaulting women as we speak.
@jimmy, you nailed it – “Hey hey, ho ho….Richard Oakley has to go….”
