This afternoon.
Grand Canal, Dublin 2
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar officially opening Google’s newest offices in the new Velasco Building on Dublin’s Grand Canal, with, above, from left: CEO of IDA Ireland Martin Shanahan, VP and Head of Google in Dublin Fionnuala Meehan, and VP Google Cloud Sales Gareth Morgan.
Velasco will serve as a home to Google’s Enterprise and Cloud teams.
The teams “will help to grow Google’s cloud and enterprise business across Europe, the Middle East and Africa”.
Another call centre so.

Meanwhile…
Some of the 200-plus staff employed at EastPoint in the Dublin docklands are being paid as little as €11.06 an hour. This is below the living wage of €11.70 an hour that social-justice groups say is the minimum required to allow for an acceptable standard of living. Discount supermarket chains Aldi and Lidl have both committed to pay the living wage to all entry-level staff….
‘Second-class’ Google workers slam conditions (Mark Tighe, Sunday Times Ireland)
It looks like a promo for X-Men
€11.06 is not bad in fairness. Its not great but its a lot better than some jobs I worked at.
In the city centre of Dublin?
for watching youtube videos?
That is nowhere near enough for that hell.
Hi-tech jobs the blushirts are always harping on about, no?
Blue Jean-I just met me a girl named Blue Jean
Blue Jean-she got a camouflaged face and no money
Remember they always let you down when you need ’em
Oh, Blue Jean – is heaven any sweeter than Blue Jean
She got a police bike
She got a turned up nose
11.06 is more than google pays in tax per year though.
and the blushirts will fight tooth and nail to keep it that way..
another hard hitting piece on workers rights/wages by that champion of workers rights Mark Tighe and the Sunday Times Ireland, must be a coincidence that the companies involved are ‘enemies’ off Murdoch…
Should he not write about it because his employer happens to be Rupert Murdoch? Leave the investigative stuff to our army of fearless journalists in other publications?
you cant be that naive,or can you,do you think he decides what he scribbles ?
Look, there is a very serious race going on to become the worlds first trillion dollar company. Now if Google are going to beat Facebook, Amazon and Apple to win that race then sacrifices will have to be made. We just can’t afford to pay a fair rate of tax or a fair wage at this time.
Ah, the Minister for pointing at things, strikes again.
Leo really does love his ‘teeth ‘n tits’ photo ops eh?
I must get on to Graham Lenihan. sequel to Father Ted. Taoiseach Ted. The character pool would be great.
The Pointing Taoiseach. The Hard Hat Taoiseach. The Sock Taoiseach. The Gobsh1** Taoiseach. And of course the Cup of Taoiseach.
Nicely done Gigsy.
Or the Davos Taoiseach. Sure you never know who you’d meet. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/oireachtas/taoiseach-met-denis-o-brien-at-davos-1.3384576?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2Foireachtas%2Ftaoiseach-met-denis-o-brien-at-davos-1.3384576
Try the S*IT Crowd.
What’s Google’s motto now? “Gentrifying locals and the gig economy immigrant out of accommodation and the community they grew up in, usefully”?
Only 8% of Docklands renters are Irish, says estate agent for tech giants

Of course, the contractors being paid less than LIDL are shoved out in Eastpoint beside the Port Tunnel, out of sight of the media. Ironically with the free food in Google and the nearby Donnybrook Fair, I doubt the average corpulent Air Wheel-riding full-time employee in Google Dublin even knows what – or where – an ALDI or LIDL is….
Time for The Ballad of Lidl and Aldi I think.

Motto: ‘do the right thing’ ….just another platitude like the last one. Completely meaningless.
