Staying In Tomorrow?

Big Tom McBride

On The Late Late Show

Gareth Naughton writes:

The Late Late Show pays tribute to Big Tom tomorrow night as the Country Special brings together the biggest names in the business to celebrate the music he loved.

Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter, Susan McCann, Paddy Cole and Fr Brian D’Arcy will join Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late couch to discuss the impact Big Tom had on the Irish country scene and his legacy.

Boyzone singer Ronan Keating will be telling viewers about the country origins of one of his biggest solo hits When You Say Nothing At All and he’ll be performing it with one of the newest stars of the scene, Lisa McHugh.

Derek Ryan and Sandy Kelly will sing the classic Islands in the Stream and Nathan Carter and Cliona Hagan will be bringing viewers their version of Hurts So Good.

Ryan will also be joined by Gloria, Philomena Begley, Jimmy Buckley, Declan Nerney, Mike Denver, Michael English and Robert Mizzell as The Late Late Show dons its Stetson and goes full country for the night…

The Late Late Show Country Special on RTÉ One at 9.35pm.

musicians on the irish country & western scene refer to it as ‘the black puddin circuit’.

RTE really only caters to pensioners and this West-Virginia-Irish minority of cud-chewers it somehow thinks represents the entire country.

It’s really baffling how much programming is devoted to this twee, theme-park crap.

I would have thought that myself until the Garth Brooks debacle. One in every eight people in the country bought tickets before it was cancelled and actually marched up and down a rainy Grafton Street in protest. Young ones & all

        That was terrifying alright.

I mean I’m sad that we ape the United States so much.

But I’m fupping mortified the part we’re absorbing is the red neckiest hickest bit,

If ever there was a night not to watch Darcy’s show, this is it. Thanks for the heads up.
