newsjustin: It’s funny, and ironic you’re so flippant about aborting ads; I posted a comment on BS 4/5 days’ ago where I mentioned that ‘Protect The 8th’ ads were appearing on any documentary/ movie I watched on YT (probably due to my .IP address) – yet, since yesterday, those same ads are no longer being advertised. I also heard today that Facebook are becoming more vigilant in monitoring their advertising standards regarding elections and referenda, and not just in Ireland.

Be careful what you wish for!

      1. newsjustin

Stopping incorrect or false (or illegally funded) ads is a worthy endevour. Trying to blanket block opposing views is immature, at best.

Like this Repeal Shield on Twitter that blocks anti-repeal views from pro-repeal people who adopt. It is really quite pathetic.

        1. Nigel

They’re ads bought and paid for. Nobody is under any obligation to allow them to be displayed if they don’t want to. Being snide about it is pure cynicism

Repeal Shield blocks abusive and harassing accounts.I would not once have thought you’d be the sort of person who would endorse the idea that someone on twitter is obliged to tolerate and listen to and answer someone elsr simply because they demand it and feel entitled to your time and attention and engagement, however horrible and/or timewasting.

          1. newsjustin

I must say, even though I’m not a Twitter user, just a browser, that it looks as though Repeal Shield is largely being used to just block pro life tweeters in general. But that’s just my observation.

          2. Nigel

You see, the pro-Repeal side tend to be far less dishonest about things and lie less about things than the No-side. Therefore when they tell you the Repeal Shield is necessary to save themselves time and energy and aggro from deeply unpleasant specimens, you can more or less take them at their word. Also, many of them are women on the internet, campaigning on a feminist political issue. How much of an internet naif do you have to be to not understand what sort of vile viciousness that will routinely attract as a matter of course, and to dismiss an effort to protect themselves from it as ‘pathetic?’

          3. :-Joe

If you think facederp, twatter, gurgle and most of the major giant US tech companies are a good idea to use for a forum of debate then you are deluded…

Enjoy all the hours wasted getting overly emotional about it though…

newsjustin: firstly, I responded to your crass comment about aborting ‘the ads!!!’; secondly, I’m not on twitter so I can’t comment on what you’re assertion is regarding Repeal Shield.

It’s apparent from your comments that you seem to be confused, or wilfully ignorant, regarding womens’ bodily autonomy; on occasion, your opinions are relatively well presented, you argue said opinions very well, and at times you have displayed compassion towards the physical, mental, emotional and geographical problems and plights women find themselves in as a result of pregnancy issues we [may] face. On other occasions, and particularly recently, the mask slips and you post comments, such as the one above. At the very least, there’s a discrepancy between how you present yourself when it suits you to change hats, at most, you’re trolling – either way, as I said earlier, be careful what you wish for when it comes to ‘incorrect or false (or illegally funded)’ advertising.

          1. newsjustin

“…be careful what you wish for when it comes to ‘incorrect or false (or illegally funded)’ advertising.”

Yeah, I’m not really sure what you’re getting at here or why I should be concerned.

And regarding “the mask”, again, I’d love to help you there, but unsure what you mean. As anyone who reads my ramblings on here will know, I’m consistently pro-life but also consistently hilarious.

        3. Daisy Chainsaw

Antis are in such a snit over Repeal Shield. Why do you care about who reads your tweets? Are they really that deserving of being seen and read by people who believe your views are dangerous to women and girls?

Nobody is denying your right to free speech, you can say what you like, but you have no right to be heard. If someone calls to your house for a row or to abuse you, you’re under no obligation to answer your door to them.

          1. newsjustin

Fair points Daisy. Again, I’m not on Twitter so don’t have any tweets for people to ignore. I guess I’m concerned that people are ensuring that they only hear one side of the debate. But that’s their concern.

          2. Janet, I ate my Avatar

one side of the debate ?
            with all due respect
pretty sure most people grew up with the overpowering Catholic church / school version of the debate but luckily for Ireland it’s got access to the whole rest of the world now too

          3. newsjustin

Why would you rely on the Catholic church’s or school’s arguments against abortion? Why not rely on science and humanism? All I’m saying is restricting one’s reading to those you already agree with is a bad idea.

          4. Janet, I ate my Avatar

My humanism deals with the living breathing woman with family friends and foul who love her given the day and not some projected possibility

What you should really do is keep the ads, and encourage all you readers to click on the ads several times, use up all their google adwords budget.

    1. :-Joe

It’s a fun idea to drain their campaign funds but you’re just encuraging the next facederp-style scandal that’s even bigger just around the next bend……

The betabet gurgle privacy data resource mining companyTM

      :-J

  2. Alors

    Still there.

Would clicking use up their budget, or just make them think they had lots of page visits?

  3. TheQ47

the best thing to do, apparently, is to click the x to remove them and then click the “Stop seeing this ad” button, and tell Google the ad is inappropriate.

  4. Tony

‘We have contacted our Google ads person to have these removed‘

Eh Bodger these ads are generated by people’s browsing history not by you. You big silly. Just ask Mr Google Adsperson when you call him on 1800-IHAVENOIDEAHOWGOOGLEADSENSEWORKS

    1. Bodger

Tony, I’ve asked them if they can block these ads. Cool it with the alpha geekness.

    2. Listrade

      #NotAllAds

Adsense doesn’t only work based on your browsing history. Some can be and is based on your cookies, but some can be placed based on the content/context of the site e.g. a lot several articles on the referendum being very popular.

      1. Tony

I see. So can a website actually ask Google to block certain ads so it’s readers dont encounter them on the site? If that is true Its news to me and I humbly hope Bodger will forgive me for scoffing at him – I am no ‘alpha geek’ whatever that is! ;)

        1. Starina

yes. so like a travel website can block ads from competitor’s travel websites, for example.

      2. :-Joe

Your ads are also based on your WAN IP address of your home router / SIM card assigned by your ISP then the LAN IP Address of your device while connected to that router / SIM Card but more specifically the MAC address of the network/wifi adaptor of the pc/device you are using so as you change networks from wifi to mobile data, back and forward, place to place etc. the sytem can still identify you and/or track your location together with all the extra meta data I don’t even want to go into here…

Even with multiple accounts or user profiles on the same PC/Device the system can diffrentiate between users for building, updating and maintaining an accurate profile on you to sell to other companies for targeting you with custom user specific marketing bile and drivel…

All this is continually hapenning in the background and before you even consider using an adblock to prevent ONLY VIEWING the ads on or from other specific websites.

        :-J

          1. :-Joe

Unfortunately, I’ve got plenty more of it…

            You’re welcome all the same…

…that’s why I’ve edited my .hosts file and redirect the top 1000 ad-sites to localhost.

          1. scottser

i would love to be impressed by that, but i haven’t a fukn jaysus what you just wrote.

          2. Martco

wahey Cian-o! but slow down there my friend with the info, don’t want em getting too adventurous…before u know it they’ll be fiddling with regedit ffs!

all they need to know is how to turn it off & turn it on again

            ;)

          3. :-Joe

Ye it’s a good method to learn more about how IP works and use if you know what you are doing but it not fool proof at all. Why?…. well…

            SHORT ANSWER:

The gurgle chrime browser uses the file and ignores it if and when it feels like it or it’s just not happy(technical term) for whatever reason, that you are not getting your ads efficiently enough for it to make more rubles(RUB) off your back and your private data which is the true valuable resource of the next phase of the internet, the decentralised digital economy and the third industrial revolution. VIVA something?!

If you type “IS GoOgLe STEALING MY PRIVATE DATA FOR MONEY” into google search and hold down your power button for ten seconds you will get this reply…

“You are a virtual private chattle slave to our flashing psychadelic fascist tools of convenience and you know you like it but soon you will learn to love it and become obsessed by it !… ORIGINAL MISSION STATEMENT 1984″”.

If your morale drops the killer robots will be sent for you…

            Muahhahahahaaaaaa!!!

Websites can ask to not host specific ads or ads from specific organisations, regardless of the user profile. Businesses and organisations can also ask to not allow their ads to be hosted on specific sites which can deprive the site of revenue.

On the phone I get Ukrainian dating sites and land shares in Florida, algorithmed, presumably, by a passing interest in Eastern European politics and climate change.

    1. rotide

      Sure Nigel.

Sure don’t we all love the odd bit of Eastern European Politics on a cold monday evening.

      1. Nigel

Yes, and the Monday mornings are unseasonably cold because of climate change so you could see how the two go together.

  6. Daisy Chainsaw

All I see is Broadsheet articles because I use Adblock Plus (Mmmm. It’s adblocky!). I havent seen one shiddy antichoice ad or video on Facebook or YouTube either and I spent a lot of time down the YouTube Rabbithole due to Infinity Wars and SNL this weekend.

  7. :-Joe

You could just stop using google adwords, google and facebook advertising marketing company nonsense altogether.

The adwords system is mostly a scam and a waste of time and money for the most part. Ask people for a donation or offer a subscription/bonus system for patrons of the website if you’re hard up for funds.

If you want to make money from advertising then employ a digital marketing/advertising specialist or ask for help pro bono/part time until it gains momentum. Try an ethical based approach where you only advertise companies that are doing something benign or relatively useful (e.g. not lying to and manipulating children, stealing their private user data, selling the data illegally to other companies for targeting and selling shitty products and services that make the customers lives and the planet even worse) and promote local Irish SME companies with discounts and any other incentives to be on your site.

Just sayin… It might sound like a big ask but little by little you’ll be suprised what you get from serious intent over a period of time.

You also need to get a security certificate for https:// and review your overall security to protect yourselves and user data from being hacked in transit or directly off your site.

Tell me more about your “real world” and why what I’ve said is such a bad idea.

Please, enlighten me about your opinion instead of just offering up a glib meaningless comment.
